Have you heard of the new Apps Tab in CampusConnect?? The Apps Tab provides students with access to online course specific software as well as all of the well-known Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Access!? Keep in mind, there are 3 different ways software is published through this new resource:
- Published Apps
- This software appears to be locally installed software, but is actually running in our server room and you?re accessing it via the Apps Tab
- Streamed Apps
- Streamed Apps will be labeled ?with the word ?Streamed? in the title.? Streamed apps can only be run on Windows PC?s because the software runs locally on your home computer, without actually ?installing? the software.
- Desktops
- Desktops are full virtual computers that run on our servers.? When you log in a full windows based computer will appear on your desktop.? You will have full permissions to download and install software on these computers, but when you log off all changes are lost, and the computer reverts to a new state.
So how does it work?? ?Students choosing to launch software via the Apps Tab on their home computer will need to install the Citrix receiver web client, and just know that Streamed Apps will require an additional streaming plugin.? These plugins, along with a good internet connection, are all that is required to access your software on your home PC or Mac.
What should I know before I use it?? After working on an assignment, you can also store all of your documents in your My Documents folder, and every student has a My Documents folder that is centrally stored on our servers.? ?Therefore, if you work on an assignment and save it in your My Documents folder, you can access it from anywhere at any time to continue working on it or submit it by your assignment deadline.? Keep in mind, students should be aware that when you close an app, if you don?t save the file to your My Documents folder, it will be lost and you?ll be unable to retrieve it for future use.
?Is this technology available on my mobile device? ?This technology is available on your favorite Apple iOS, Android, Blackberry & WebOS devices, but you will need to install the Citrix Receiver client from your device?s app store.? Once you?ve done so, setup instructions can be found by visiting the Apps Tab in CampusConnect!
