Jan. 23, 2013 ? Forget digital fingerprints, iris recognition and voice identification, the next big thing in biometrics could be your knobbly knees. Just as a fingerprints and other body parts are unique to us as individuals and so can be used to prove who we are, so too are our kneecaps. Computer scientist Lior Shamir of Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan, has now demonstrated how a knee scan could be used to single us out.
The approach based on MRI could be used to quickly register and identify people in a moving queue as they approach passport control at airports for instance or as they walk through the entrance to an office block or other building.
Shamir has tested the approach and achieved accuracy of around 93 percent, this coupled with other factors such as possession of the correct passport, being in the right place at the right time or tied to other biometrics such as iris recognition and signature analysis could be used to prevent deception and fraud. Contact lenses can be used to dupe iris recognition systems, passports can be forged.
"Deceptive manipulation requires an invasive and complicated medical procedure, and therefore it is more resistant to spoofing compared to methods such as face, fingerprints, or iris," Shamir points out. It would be almost impossible to fake one's internal body parts including the kneecaps. Of course, kneecaps are a renowned target of irreversible and deleterious adjustment in the criminal world, but even then shattered kneecaps are likely to be unique to the victim in any case.
MRI scanning avoids health risk of scanning with ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, it would also avoid some of the privacy issues that have arisen with terahertz scanners that can "see" beneath a person's clothing, whereas MRI goes more than skin deep. There is a distinct problem with the implementation of MRI scanning in a security setting in that MRI scanners are very large machines and take a long time to acquire an image of even a small body part such as the kneecap. However, developments in MRI technology are fast moving and it is likely that within the medium term more portable and faster equipment will emerge that could fulfill the security role.
"Further studies will develop the concept of internal biometrics, and will lead to automatic identification methods that are highly resistant to spoofing," concludes Shamir.

Kelly Hu appears on "Castle" Monday night.

A beautiful vixen is attracting the attention of Det. Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) Monday night on "Castle" -- and her name is not Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones).
Kelly Hu ("Arrow," "The Vampire Diaries") is guest starring as Scarlet Jones, a bodyguard whose client is murdered in an episode titled "Death Gone Crazy." During the investigation, sparks fly between Esposito -- recently rebuffed by his ex, Lanie -- and Scarlet.
"There's just a little hanky-panky," the actress revealed to The Clicker. "There's a date ? a little attraction going on."
No wonder, considering Javi's Special Forces background, it seems natural that he'd be drawn to such a fierce femme.
Hu plays a similar character on "Arrow" -- China White, Oliver Queen's iconic adversary.
"For some reason I'm always getting these roles, and everybody thinks I'm such a badass," said Hu.
She has a black belt in martial arts, but Hu insisted with a laugh, "In reality, no person in their right mind would hire me to guard their body!"
"I'm not as tough as people think I am," she added.
Sounds a lot like Esposito, no? Despite his brash exterior, he still has a soft spot for a certain sexy medical examiner.
Even guest star Hu admited, "A lot of people are pulling for (Esposito and Lanie) to get back together."

Opera, the company behind the Opera mini web browser for iPhone and iPad is now working on a new browser which it is calling ?Ice?. The new browser will use WebKit and was shown off at an internal meeting just before Christmas. The guys from Pocket-lint managed to get a copy of a video from the meeting and some interesting information on this new browser.
In a video shown to us of an internal "all-hands" meeting held before Christmas, Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera, outlined the company's strategy for 2013. Afterwards, product managers took to the stage to demo the new browser, which will be run on the WebKit, not Presto, platform.
The new Opera Ice browser will be based around hiding the technology as much as possible and embracing rich applications. It will ditch all buttons and instead use gestures to control key elements like forwards and backwards. "This is a full touch and tablet-focused browser," said the product manager in the video we've seen. "Most are taking a PC browser and squishing [it] into a tablet, or they are taking a mobile browser and blowing it up to fill the space."
The new offering from Opera will not replace its existing Opera mini mobile browser. The company sees that as still having an important role to fill in bringing new customers to its browser platform and then hopefully moving up to the new ?Ice? system.
The browser does look like a good option however for any alternative browser to be a permanent replacement for mobile Safari it needs to be able to be set as the default browser. Until Apple gives us that option it is always going to be hard to use it full time. Take a look at the Opera ?Ice? browser in action in the video below and let us know what you think! USC Information Technology Services reported that the hardware problems that caused frequent USC Wireless outages during December have been fully resolved.

ITS added new hardware that can better manage and support large influxes of data. The department also reconfigured the networks to improve performance.
?The USC Wireless network is growing on a daily basis,? said Russ Kaurloto, ITS associate chief information officer. ?Many students, faculty and staff come to campus with multiple wireless devices. ITS is always evaluating improvements to the network to improve access and performance.?
USC experienced numerous outages across its USC Wireless and USC Wireless Plus networks during the week before finals last semester, causing widespread frustration among students. While technicians at that time identified that the problem was with the hardware, they experienced difficulty pinpointing the root of the problem.
Since December, technicians have worked to identify and resolve the outage problem.
?The cause of the problem was an inordinate amount of network connections and traffic, including video streaming, which saturated the network,? Kaurloto said.
USC ITS recorded more than 27,750 devices attempting to connect to USC Wireless simultaneously on Dec. 5 alone.
Initially, the performance issues facing USC Wireless were intermittent and limited to short intervals, allowing the network to recover from high demand. However, without a continuous outage, it was more difficult for technicians to identify the precise cause of the issue.
First, technicians had to identify the types of traffic creating an excessive load on the network. Then, once the channels were identified, technicians were then required to evaluate the available technical options to ensure that they would effectively resolve the problem.
To ensure these issues do not resurface this semester, Kaurloto explained that USC ITS has incorporated several preventive measures into the network, including limiting the types of traffic allowed on the wireless networks.
?ITS is constantly evaluating network performance and adding new monitoring and networking tools,? Kaurloto said.
The wireless issues last semester were disruptive both in and outside of the classroom.
?Everything in the classroom has become more digital. Many of my professors send out study guides, assignments and notes online,? said Sabrina Fung, a graduate student majoring in urban planning. ?Without the Internet, it was difficult to access and download files from Blackboard when I came to study on campus.?
Because of the high demand for an Internet connection, students also found it difficult to access alternate Internet resources on campus, particularly at the libraries.
Katherine Wu, a junior? majoring in biomedical engineering, who also works at Leavey Library, said that Internet outages led to the unfamiliar problem of overcrowding in the library.
?There were long lines for computers and it was really hot,? Wu said.
For some students, however, the lack of Internet led to an increase in productivity.
?Since I could not access the Internet, I spent time getting work done that did not require the Internet,? said Melinda Grodsky, a graduate student majoring in public administration. ?I actually found this to be productive. It allowed me to focus on readings and assignments without distraction from the Internet.?
Despite the frustration the outages caused last month, students did not express concern or worry that the USC Wireless issues would present additional problems for them this semester.
?I?m not concerned about future problems with USC Wireless,? Grodsky said. ?I think USC is on top of it.?

Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion and then went public. The question is, will Instagram survive the embrace of its owner and benefactor or will it be its demise. That question is yet to be answered, but removing part of its access to Twitter, and also announcing new terms of use that was a PR disaster are maybe signs that Facebook could stuff it up.
Pinterest became the darling of the social media set, especially the ladies and fashionistas.
Twitter continued to grow after being welcomed into the Apple fold with its inclusion in the mobile operating system on its iPhones.
Google+ continued to grow and with 5 billion ?+1? buttons being clicked on every day and with over 400 million users its success makes Google?s investment of over half a billion dollars in the social network platform look like a good decision.
LinkedIn?decided its user interface needed a makeover and re-designed its website to increase its social attractiveness.
Content has become mainstream as the foundation and cornerstone of social media marketing effort. Google has significantly changed the game by adding the social signals of the ?+1? button with its Google+ platform as an important part of determining what content to serve up and how it is indexed so it appears higher in search results.
Expect to see more content marketing tools, tactics and strategies that accept the fact that social, search and content are increasingly integrated and intertwined.
Content is still king, but the shiny social media toys distracted us for a while from the importance of building content rich multi-media digital assets.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said Friday they would conduct a comprehensive review of Boeing?s 787 airplane program following several high-profile mishaps including a fire. But the FAA sought Friday to reassure fliers that they still believe the airplane is safe to fly.
?We believe this is a safe aircraft,? FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said at a news conference to detail the review of the aircraft.
Huerta said the FAA would review all aspects of the new aircraft, including design and production. ?But the?review will focus heavily on the electric components of the aircraft.?
The new 787 Dreamliner, which went into service in the fall of 2011, relies much more heavily on electric components?than previous airplane models.
That's one of several ways in which the 787 is groundbreaking in comparison to previous airplane models. The new, fuel-efficient aircraft also is made largely from lighter composite materials instead of aluminum, which is one reason it promises to be more fuel-efficient than comparable aircraft flying today.
Boeing officials said Friday that they welcome a review of the new model aircraft and that the FAA's scrutiny did not diminish the company's confidence in the airplane.
Ray Conner, Boeing's head of commercial airplanes, noted that this is the first all-new aircraft to enter service in quite some time, and he?said it was important to emphasize that all new commercial airplanes have issues when they enter service.?
But Conner said at the press briefing that none of the incidents "alters our complete confidence in the 787."
Shares in Boeing were down in early trading Friday.
Analysts said the review is a sign of a strong regulatory agency that?s just doing its job.
?There?s no reason to suspect this plane is being unsafe, but it?s important to review procedures, technology and manufacturing in light of what?s happened,? said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis with Teal Group.
The review is unusual, he said, but that?s only because the new 787 is unusual. It?s a brand new plane with a remarkable amount of new technology in it.
?There?s nothing that would make you question the safety of flying,? Aboulafia said.
The announcement of the FAA review comes after a difficult week for the 787 program. On Monday, a fire broke out on one of the airplanes while it was parked at Boston's Logan International Airport. No passengers were on board the Japan Airlines plane?at the time.
The next day, a fuel leak forced a 787 operated by Japan Airlines to cancel take-off at the same airport.
Then,?All Nippon Airways said Wednesday?it was forced to cancel a 787 Dreamliner flight scheduled to fly?from Yamaguchi prefecture in western Japan to Tokyo due to worries about brake problems.?
The aircraft was hit by two more, separate events on Friday, both involving All Nippon Airways.?

The first incident was reported by a crew flying from Tokyo to Matsuyama in western Japan, where the pilot noticed a web-like crack mid-flight in the cockpit window.?The plane is currently being serviced in Matsuyama to have its window replaced.
Meanwhile, the other incident involved an oil stain, possibly a leak from the generator of the plane's left engine after completing its flight from Tokyo to southern-western Miyazaki. The plane has since been serviced ?and has already returned to Tokyo.?None of the passengers from either flights were injured.
According to an?airline spokesperson, both incidents are not unique to the Boeing 787 nor are they considered critical.
This week's issues are not the first problems for the 787 aircraft. In December, the airplane also suffered a string of mishaps.
The first Dreamliner entered service in late 2011, more than three years after Boeing initially said that the airplane would be ready for its first customer. The 787 was beset by delays during the lengthy development process, in part because of a decision to outsource large chunks of the work to outside suppliers.
Still, many expect the 787 to be an aviation success story, and aviation experts have said that glitches are common when a new aircraft enters service with a slew of new technologies.
Boeing has sold nearly 900 of the 787s, with a list price of around $207 million to $243 million. It has delivered?49 of the aircraft so far, according to the company's website.?

Where do you work?: The near west side of Madison.
Foods you love: Where to begin? A fresh briny oyster with a glass of good champagne has to be one of life's great pleasures. Pistachio gelato has to be another. There also can't be many things better than a good plate of pasta cooked simply with fresh tomatoes, olive oil and basil. If I'm cooking at home I love a hearty stew that simmers on the stove for hours -- with a glass of red wine in hand. That's my ultimate winter comfort food. I also got really into Mexican food while out in Sonoma this past fall for the wine harvest. If you go, check out El Molino and get the chicken tamales with mole. I promise you won't want to come home!
Foods you prefer to avoid or won't eat: When it comes to food I'm pretty adventurous and will try just about anything. The only things I avoid are fast food, chain restaurants or anything overly processed.
Favorite places to eat lunch in Madison: I grew up in a restaurant family and it's always nice to see my family and grab a bite to eat at Gino's on State, Gino's Deli or Bellini Restaurant anytime of day. The Sicilian sub at Gino's Deli is delicious and a great quick lunch for when I'm on the go. Other favorites include Marigold Kitchen for its chile-braised chicken sandwich, Brasserie V for "moules et frites," Mediterranean Caf? for lamb shwarma, Kabul on State Street for dal with homemade flat bread and Sushi Muramoto for seaweed salad followed by black sesame ice cream for dessert. I also really enjoy Nostrano for a more elegant business lunch. Their handmade salumi and pastries are fabulous.
Fallback "go-to" lunch places: I am a huge fan of Lao Laan-Xang on Willy Street and could eat their spicy curry squash daily. I also really enjoy La Baguette on the west side -- especially the Mediterranean sandwich.
Favorite lunch dishes: Especially on a cold winter's day, you can't go wrong with a steaming bowl of beef pho from Saigon Noodles on the west side for $7.50. The smells of chili, basil and lime take me back to a wonderful trip to Vietnam a few years ago.
Now-defunct Madison restaurant you long to eat at again: That's easy. I would love to sit outside on the patio at my father's old restaurant, Peppino's, and have Lobster Livornese with a glass of bubbly while listening to Concerts on the Square.
If you could eat only on one side of town, which would you pick? The near east side. In addition to Lao Laan-Xang, I also like Umami for ramen and pork buns and Dobhan for lamb biryani. I tend to like small family-owned restaurants with interesting and delicious food and think this area has a lot of these hidden gems.
What's your # 1 food desire yet-to-be-fulfilled?: I would love to do a gastronomical tour of Japan someday -- visiting sake breweries, sampling sushi and learning more about Japanese cuisine. Two weeks in Burgundy dedicated to wine tasting and French country cuisine is also on my bucket list.

The Malaysian Latter-day Saint youth are model examples of gospel faithfulness. Many youth live in small apartments or terrace homes. Some live in pieced-together wood structures built in areas of Bintulu with no electrical service or waste water systems. They use generators for electricity or candles if necessary for light (generators and gas are expensive). Water is supplied from a network of small hoses fed off a main line from the highway. Water is also stored in barrels. Bathing with water from barrels can be challenging.
Branch missionaries and family history consultants teach missionary lessons to a young woman in their branch.
However, when they show up to Church, they are wearing their Sunday best.
Most of the youth attend double shift schools which begin early in the morning and end late in the afternoon. In their free time their favorite gathering place is the Church. Here they have access to the cultural hall for activities, the library and the Wifi Internet for study and the pianos (they love to sing and dance).
A recent effort to engage youth in East Malaysia in family history work has been instrumental in helping these youth overcome challenges and embrace an eternal perspective.

With the help of full-time senior missionaries, youth in Malaysia enter names during one of their Saturday afternoon meetings at the chapel in Bintulu.
The family history initiative began when a senior missionary couple, Brother Orie Orien and his wife, Sister Ruth Orien, started visiting families. They learned that the history of members from the original tribes of East Malaysia was based on an oral language with few, if any, written records. And when the oldest member of the family died, they often took the names of their ancestors with them to the grave. Many with whom the Oriens met did not know the names of their grandparents. In a push to record family histories, the Oriens decided to use the Gawai'i Dayak festival ?? a festival of the rice harvest ? to encourage members to harvest their family names. During this celebration, families return to what is called a longhouse ? literally a long building that can house dozens of families. Each family has a separate door to enter their living quarters (called a "bilik") which are built next to each other in a long row under a common roof, and there is a covered veranda (called a "ruai") that extends the entire length of the longhouse. Here they can listen to their elders share the folklore of their ancestors and record their names. The Oriens enlisted the help of the youth from three branches in Malaysia and distributed family tree sheets. The youth went out to the homes of the members to help record the names of the families with the goal of eventually taking these names to the temple.

Shortly after they began family history work, some of the teens' schools gave them laptops that they have been able to use to further the progress of family history. Using the wireless Internet at their meetinghouse, they access lds.org and family history sites.

"To start with, we [on the] Bintulu family history team love to do our calling as family history consultants because we know the importance of getting the names in for family history. ... We take this seriously because we know how important it is to get the names in for families and their ancestors so they will be given a chance to know the gospel of Jesus Christ," President Jack wrote in an email.

On Saturdays, Sungai Plan youth head to the Church, fire up their laptops and work on family history.
The youth began meeting regularly once a week at the Church for two hours for family history work, or to learn English or train as branch missionaries.
"They are a humble group of kids, [with far fewer resources than] many of the youth in the U.S., but President Jack has a good relationship with them and thinks up activities for them to be involved in," said Sister Kathryn Yeates, a senior missionary in Bintulu, East Malaysia.

The youth in the Tanjung Kidurong Bintulu Branch began bringing family history sheets to the homes of members of the branch.
Similar to an emergency action plan, President Jack encouraged youth under his leadership to enter their own family names first and then reach out to help others.
President Jack and the youth visit members of the branch and enter their ancestors' names into the family history site and have a goal to enter the names from their branch by the end of 2012.
An important resource for family history work in East Malaysia comes from the books of Benedict Sandin, who spent his life writing about the people who migrated to East Malaysia. In one of his books he details the genealogy of 50 different family groups. The youth in Bintulu were able to use this information for submitting names for temple work.

Tanjung Kidurong Branch youth prepare a skit for the branch Christmas activity. The skit features branch missionaries taking non-members through a temple tour, much like a temple open house tour.
"The family history program was one way for the youth of Tanjung Kidurong Branch to both learn and give a valuable service at the same time," Sister Yeates said.
As within many cultures throughout the world, it is not always easy to be a member of the Church, Sister Orien said. However, the youth in the Church here are anxiously engaged in their faith and enjoy providing service through family history work.
"We hope the other youth in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [can] learn the importance of family history work in their daily lives," President Jack said.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? A couple who became husband and wife on the "Love Float," a surprise reunion between a returning soldier and his little boy, and a grand marshal famed globally for her chimpanzee research were among the highlights of the 124th Rose Parade on Tuesday.
The parade's spectacular 42 floral floats brightened an otherwise cloudy New Year's morning and boosted the spirits of a chilled crowd estimated at some 700,000 spectators lining the 5-mile route.
"The only way that you're going to experience the Rose Parade is to be here in person," said Los Angeles resident Gineen Alcantara-Nakama, who camped out Monday night to save front row sidewalk spots.
"Growing up, I watched it on television, but it's not the same ? the smell, the atmosphere, smelling the flowers as they come down the street. And the energy. It's like being with family all night long."
Spectators rose to a standing ovation when Army Sgt. First Class Eric Pazz, who was riding on the Natural Balance Pet Foods float along with other service members, got off the float and walked over to his surprised wife Miriam and 4-year-old son Eric Jr., who came running out of the stands into the arms of his 32-year-old father.
Miriam Pazz had been told she had won a contest to attend the parade and did not know her husband, who is deployed in Afghanistan, would be there. A native of Clio, Mich., Pazz is a highly decorated soldier who has also served in Iraq. The family, who currently lives in Germany, climbed aboard the float for the rest of the route.
Cheers also went up for a Chesapeake, Va., couple who tied the knot aboard Farmers Insurance "Love Float."
Gerald Sapienza and Nicole Angelillo were high school classmates who reconnected 10 years later and won the parade wedding over three other couples in a nationwide contest. They received a trip to Pasadena, a wedding gown, tuxedo, rings, marriage license fees, Rose Bowl game tickets and hair and makeup for the bride.
The parade's theme this year was "Oh the Places You'll Go!" named in honor of the Dr. Seuss book. It served as a fitting slogan for grand marshal British primatologist Jane Goodall, who has spent much of her life in Tanzania studying chimpanzees.
Goodall chose conservation as her message for the parade
"My dream for this New Year's Day is for everyone to think of the places we can all go if we work together to make our world a better place," said Goodall, 78.
"Every journey starts with a step and I am pleased to see the Tournament of Roses continue to take steps toward not only celebrating beauty and imagination, but also a cleaner environment."
This year's parade also saw the first-ever float entered by the Defense Department.
The $247,000 military float was a replica of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington to commemorate the veterans from that conflict.
The float that scooped up the parade's grand "Sweepstakes" prize for the most beautiful floral presentation and design was "Dreaming in Paradise" by fruit and vegetable producer Dole.
According to parade rules, every inch of the floats must be covered with flowers or plant material, most of it applied by volunteers in the last weeks of December.
Besides floats, the parade also featured 23 marching bands and 21 equestrian units from around the world.
Banda El Salvador, a 200-plus member marching band and folkloric dance troupe, played sassy Latin rhythms and paid homage to their Central American country by dressing in the national colors of blue and white and shouting "Arriba El Salvador!"
The Aguiluchos band from Puebla, Mexico, earned cheers for their fancy footwork and vaquero rope tricks. Colorful dancers from Costa Rica and South Korea were other crowd pleasers.
Die-hard parade fans staked out their spots overnight or in pre-dawn hours with folding chairs, hammocks and portable barbeque grills despite frosty temperatures.
Emergency personnel received a number of cold-weather exposure calls, police department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian told City News Service.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, police had made a total of 22 arrests along the parade route since 6 p.m. Monday, said police Lt. Rick Aversan. All but one arrest were for suspected public intoxication. The other was for suspected possession of burglary tools that could have been used to break into cars, police said.

Highlights of a tentative agreement Monday between the White House and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., aimed at averting wide tax increases and budget cuts scheduled to take effect in the new year. ?Alternative minimum tax: Permanently addresses the alternative minimum tax and indexes it for inflation to prevent nearly 30 million middle- and upper-middle income taxpayers from being hit with higher tax bills averaging almost $3,000. The tax was originally designed to ensure that the wealthy did not avoid owing taxes by using loopholes.
?Other tax changes: Extends for five years Obama-sought expansions of the child tax credit, earned income tax credit, and an up to $2,500 tax credit for college tuition. Also extends for one year accelerated "bonus" depreciation of business investments in new property and equipment, a tax credit for research and development costs and a tax credit for renewable energy such as wind-generated electricity.
?Unemployment benefits: Extends jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed for one year.
?Cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors: Blocks a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors for one year. The cut is the product of an obsolete 1997 budget formula.
