Blige talks turkey over chicken ad controversy

By Rolling Stone

Mary J. Blige is speaking out for the first time about the stir surrounding her controversial Burger King commercial that leaked in April.

Appearing on Hot 97's Angie Martinez show on Thursday, the R&B star talked about the fallout from the ad and asked for forgiveness from her fans. "I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposefully. I thought I was doing something right. So forgive me."

Burger King pulls controversial Mary J. Blige ad

In the Burger King commerical, which leaked back in April, Blige sang about a fried chicken wrap to the tune of her song "Don't Mind." The ad was widely criticized for playing into African-American stereotypes, and the fast-food chain quickly pulled the commercial, citing music licensing issues. Soon after, the company issued a public mea culpa to Blige: "We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon."

On Thursday, Blige recalled seeing the leaked version of the ad for the first time. "Oh my God, my heart dropped down to my stomach," Blige told Martinez. "I got this sweat and I said, real calm, 'This too shall pass.' But it just kept getting worse and worse and worse ... I went online to listen to the remix I did with Fat Joe, and all I can see is 'Burger King' and 'chicken' and 'buffoonery.' It just broke my heart.

"I would never just bust out singing about chicken and chicken wings," added Blige. "It hurt my feelings and crushed me for two days."

Explaining why she's remained silent about the ad until now, Blige said, "There was too much going on for me to stick my head out there and say anything. So I just pulled back and watched everyone and everything."

100 greatest singers of all time: Mary J. Blige

Blige added that she was originally sold on the idea that she would "be shot in an iconic way" for the ad and that she'd seen it as "a great branding opportunity." She also said that while she understood the jokes about the spot looking back, the experience also showed her who her real friends were. "Busta Rhymes hit me and he was like, "Are you ok, sis? I see what you were trying to do,'" recalled Blige. "Fat Joe hit me; he was like, 'Yo, we don't care about that stupid chicken commercial or whatever. We love you, Mary, and we know what you were trying to do."'

Still, Blige said, "It was a mistake when you look at it at the end of the day, because people look at it as a mistake. But I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that."

Apple wins 2nd US sales ban on Samsung Galaxy

SEOUL, South Korea ?

An American judge ordered Samsung Electronics Co. to halt U.S. sales of its Galaxy Nexus smartphone while the court considers Apple's claim that the South Korean company infringed its patents.

In Apple's second victory in a week against Android devices, the U.S. District Court of Northern California said Friday that the Galaxy Nexus smartphone "likely" infringes four patents held by Apple Inc., including a patent used in the "Siri" voice-activated assistance available in the iPhone 4S.

"Apple has clearly shown that it is likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary injunctive relief," Judge Lucy Koh wrote in the ruling available online.

She ordered Apple to post a $96 million bond - an estimated damage sustained by Samsung from the temporary sales ban - in case the iPhone maker loses to Samsung in a later trial, scheduled for 2014. The sales ban in the United States will be effective immediately when Apple posts the bond.

The Galaxy Nexus lawsuit is one in a series of legal battles between Apple and Samsung. The two world's largest makers of smartphones together claimed more than half of the global smartphone market in the first three months of this year.

Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in multiple lawsuits in Asia, North America and Europe since April 2011 when Apple accused Samsung of copying its iPhone and iPad. Samsung shot back with claims that Apple is using its mobile technology without permission.

The latest order from the Californian court follows Koh's decision Tuesday to temporarily block the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer in the United States.

But it is "the first serious blow" Apple has dealt to Samsung and Google Inc., said Florian Mueller, a Germany-based patent analyst. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was released more than a year ago and accounts for a small portion of Samsung's mobile sales. The Galaxy Nexus smartphone was launched in the U.S. market in December 2011.

The Nexus is also the first smartphone to be powered by the most recent Android operating system called "Ice Cream Sandwich," which includes a unified search feature that lets users search information stored in various locations with a single input.

As a result of the sales ban, Samsung and Google's "co-developed flagship device for the current generation of Android will have to be stripped of some or all of its Siri-like functionality," Mueller said in an emailed response.

Samsung said it is disappointed with the court order and will take all legal measures.

"We are currently working closely with Google to resolve this matter, as the patent in question concerns Google's unified search function," said Nam Ki-yung, a Samsung spokesman.

"Samsung will continue to take all available measures, including legal action to ensure the Galaxy Nexus remains available to consumers."

Apple did not return calls seeking comment.

Two teen girls in Canada face human trafficking charges as Ottawa police search for a third suspect

Ottowa police have charged two 15-year-old girls with human trafficking for allegedly luring other teenage girls into prostitution.

Staff Sgt. John McGetrick called the case shocking Tuesday and said police have never seen anything like it before.

Police allege that on three separate occasions, the teenagers lured three other girls between the ages of 13 and 17 to a residence for social reasons. From there, the victims were driven to other locations for the purpose of prostitution.

The girls face multiple charges, including human trafficking, robbery, procuring, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault, uttering threats and abduction.

Police are looking for a third suspect, a 17-year-old girl.

McGetrick declined to provide details but said the victims were confined and forced to engage in prostitution.

Chicago cops to work with ex-felons to curb shootings

By Jim Gold, msnbc.com

Chicago police will try to reduce the city?s growing murder rate by partnering for the first-time with anti-violence group CeaseFire, which trains ex-cons to attack violence as if it were a spreading disease.

Chicago-based CeaseFire, whose ?violence interrupters? programs have been replicated and studied in several U.S. cities, as well as in Iraq, will receive $1 million from the Windy City?s Department of Public Health beginning July 13.

CeaseFire previously received state and federal money, but not city funding, the group said.

The partnership was proposed after Memorial Day weekend shootings left 10 dead, pushing the city?s homicide count to 200 for the year, the Chicago Sun-times reported. By June 17, the Sun Times said, the city?s murders were running 38 percent ahead of the same period in 2011.

The new funding will boost the number of CeaseFire program workers in Chicago to about 140, up from 100, Dr. Gary Slutkin, CeaseFire founder, told msnbc.com. ?

See the NBCChicago.com story?

Slutkin last weekend was on a U.S. Conference of Mayors panel with mayors from Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Fresno to encourage other cities to support CeaseFire?s model, which can be seen online in PBS? ?Frontline? documentary ?The Interrupters.?

Slutkin, an internal medicine and infectious diseases specialist, said CeaseFire takes a public health approach to public safety.

?Violence has been misunderstood,? Slutkin said. ?In the absence of a correct strategy, violence will go up, down or sideways in waves. The only way to predictably reduce it is using methods that interrupt it.?

Violence is perpetuated as people consider it the norm, he warned.

?You get a situation where someone looks at someone?s girlfriend, now the expectation is it?s normal to shoot someone,? he said.

He said CeaseFire tries to intervene with the people who are at highest risk for violence.

Slutkin acknowledged?a Sun-Times report that six?ex-felons?have been arrested while working for CeaseFire. However, he said, it's rare. The program sees just a 1 or 2 percent relapse rate, he said, with only two people out of 600 hired over 12?years having been convicted.

Workers go through intensive training, are?hired by panels and are subjected to regular drug?tests, Slutkin said.

On the street, they work like disease-control workers.

?What we do is figure out who the people are who are spreading the disease, the people most likely to be shooters,? said Amy Ellenbogen, who directs Save Our Streets Crown Heights, a Brooklyn, N.Y., program replicating CeaseFire and serving about 20,000 residents in a 40-block area.

From an eight-member team, four work as street-outreach counselors, trying to get the people most at risk of committing violence to change their focus, perhaps toward getting a GED or job, she told msnbc.com.

?Street outreach is incredibly important, knowing the players and how to persuade them to make better choices,? Ellenbrogen said.

Another four are the interrupters, who step in to mediate potentially violent situations.

?We?ve mediated over 100 incidences? since the team was hired in February 2010, Ellenbogen said.

Like other public health campaign, the program tries to ?change the norms of the community,? which means making gun violence not acceptable.

Merchants have signs in window that count the days since last shooting; pizza boxes at a local parlor carry the words ?Stop shooting, start living?; neighborhood posters proclaim, ?Don?t shoot, I want to? grow up.?

Community meetings are held when a shooting does occur, she said. The number of shooting deaths dropped to 13 last year from 25 the year before in the area served, she said. ?

May 29: Ceasefire director and University of Illinois/Chicago epidemiologist, Gary Slutkin, featured in NBC's Kevin Tibbles' report, describes his organization's approach to reducing gang violence.

Halogen Light Bulbs Are Better Power Ef ... - IdeaMarketers.com

What particularly is a normal light bulb, also referred to as an incandescent light bulb, and a halogen lamp? Well, here follows a small description of both.

The light bulbs seen in regular households are generally known as the Incandescent bulbs. But they are regarded as electricity stealers in comparison to alternative light source choices, for the reason that just about a tenth of the electricity taken in in fact will become light, and then the remainder of that power is wasted. They typically work for about 750 to 1000 hours of usage, so, it is not effective.

The incandescent light bulbs are made from a reasonably large and thin frosted glass envelope. On the inside of the glass is a gas identified as argon and/or nitrogen. In the core of the light you will discover something called the tungsten filament. What happens is that the energy heats up the filament. And like any metal that becomes hot, the tungsten becomes white hot and then that heat sends out a great deal of light. Because the tungsten inside the filament slowly disappears and deposits within the glass bulb it will carry electric power until finally it is actually too thin and so the bulb will definitely burn out.

A halogen light bulb functions fundamentally the same as an incandescent light bulb. The reason behind this is that any halogen light bulb also makes use of a tungsten filament; the only difference is that it is encased in a smaller quartz cover. If the cover for the filament were being manufactured from glass it would certainly have burned, since it is so close to the filament.

The gas that is used in these bulbs is a gas belonging to the halogen group. The property of these gases is extremely interesting and they are simply mixed with tungsten vapor. The moment the temperatures are effectively high, the halogen gas will blend with the tungsten atoms when they disappear and then redeposit them on the filament. This procedure of recycling makes it possible for the filament to work for a whole lot longer.

The possibility is there to run the filament of the halogen bulb hotter, meaning that it should create more light per unit of power. Considering that the quartz cover is very near to the filament it makes it extremely hot compared to a regular bulb. Although there is an increase of heat, the halogen light bulb consumes 25 percent less energy.

However, there exists a new class of halogen bulbs that has been recently developed. They make use of a particular infrared covering to redirect infrared light back toward the tungsten filament, which in turn reduces the wasted heat and improves efficiency by up to 30 percent in comparison to a standard incandescent bulb.

For a wider variety of bulbs, including Fluorescent, LED and Energy Efficient light bulbs as well as Halogen bulbs go and have a evaluate http://www.microlamp.com. These days you are able to buy just about anything over the internet, even light bulbs, so why not make use of this opportunity.

What a good thing a canvas photo print is

Having a canvas photo print is not just having a photo placed onto a canvas then framed, it?s something that has great meaning and true spirit, and thus by meaning it is true artwork in the making because if you take an original painting done by a painter then you get a very eary and tonal sense that allot of hard work and expertise has gone into the making of the painting but if you look at a canvas print of a painting then you still get a small amount of that same kind of achievement but with a very modern twist to it which is what most people prefer to have in their homes these days and allot of interior designers will use canvas photos and canvas prints for the show rooms and also for their personal shows to give a very warming and very contemporary looks to the room that they are hung in, not only that but having canvas photo prints hung in just one room can have a carry effect on the hole house which is just brilliant.

So yes if you are going to have a?canvas photo print made form you very precious images and photos then a great thing to do would be to have it check by a canvas printer before hand, simply email it across to them and have them check in the computer photo editing software so they can have a look at the print quality before you go ahead and have it printed onto canvas and then that way you will be sure to end up with a quality product at the end of the ordering process.

These is allot of different this you can have printed on canvas and one really good picture to have printed if you?re a fan of any celebrities would be to have one of them printed on to canvas but in a pop art style canvas print, this way you will be able to get a very well know artist on canvas mage into art, pop art is basically taking photo and then changing it in a photo editing software a bit like Photoshop and then changing it into a cartoon style looking picture, once this has been changed you can experiment with it and have different colour to your liking that you think would suite you wall decoration the best, once decided and you have don?t this yourself you can then upload and order this to be put on a canvas print through a certain canvas printing website but if your unable to do this yourself with the pop art then there is canvas printer out there that will offer this type of service so you can go ahead and get them to do the hard work for you which will make an amazing different the appearance of your finished canvas photo print and that all on its own is something? very special that you can treasure for years and years to come..

Google Nexus 7 tablet is 7-inch quad-core HD movie, book and game machine

9 hrs.

Just as?Google's developer conference was getting started, details of the company's?rumored Nexus 7 tablet emerged. As previously reported, it is a 7-inch tablet powered by a Nvidia?Tegra 3 quad-core processor?that will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and come in 8GB ($199)?and 16GB versions ($249). You can order today, but it ships in mid-July.

The display is true high-def ? 1280x800, so a bit better than 720p ? and there's a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera and microphone?for video chatting, though there's no rear-facing camera. (That's okay -- do you really take pictures with tablets?) It also has a micro?USB port, GPS, near-field communication and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's no mention of an SD card slot for expanding the memory, however.

Not surprisingly, it was built by (and even branded)?Asus, the manufacturer that had already?made the most headway with quad-core gamer-friendly Android tablets. (See our video on the Transformer Prime below.)

Clearly, at a starting price of $199, the Nexus 7 is positioned to compete with the similarly 7-inch?Kindle Fire, rather than taking on the 9.7-inch?iPad (and the 10.6-inch Surface tablet from Microsoft).

Although they were careful to make the device comfortable to hold, with a textured back and light weight, some people just prefer to have a case anyway. And there is indeed a nice little $20 matte polymer cover in which you can ensconce your Nexus 7 and protect its screen. It's available in gray right now, but Asus sent out a picture showing it in a number of bright yet muted colors:

Meanwhile, Google pitched the Nexus 7 ? with its gryoscope and accelerometer ??as "a serious gaming device." By way of example, they showed off the action-heavy game "Horn" and the zombie shooter "Dead Trigger."?

And because, with all of those tablets, content seems to be the biggest incentive, Google is playing up the Play store, even granting early buyers $25 in Google?Play credit and "some great free content" including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Even if you don't think any of the "Transformers" films is truly "great," it is nice to see Google aggressively pushing content, even adding TV shows and magazines to their lineup. Tablet buyers need a reason to buy a tablet.?

UPDATE:?Google has made the above video operational again, along with the following links to the?8GB and 16GB versions on Google Play. Have at 'em!?

Pitch Perfect: expert tips to snag an agent ? Midwest Writers Workshop

Pitch Perfect: expert tips to snag an agent

Meet Chuck Sambuchino!

Chuck Sambuchino is an editor for Writer?s Digest Books (an imprint of F+W Media) and is the editor of Guide to Literary Agents as well as Children?s Writer?s & Illustrator?s Market. He also oversaw the third edition of Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript. Chuck has instructed on writing and publishing at more than 50 writing events in the past five years, including presentations in Italy and Canada, and he is sometimes one of the conference?s keynote speakers. His humor book, How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack (2010), was featured by Reader?s Digest, USA Today, The New York Times and AOL News.

Chuck is also a writer and freelance editor. He is a produced playwright, with both original and commissioned works produced. He is a magazine freelancer, with more than 600 of his articles appearing in print. His website?the Guide to Literary Agents blog?is one of the largest blogs on writing & publishing.

Chuck is the the keynote speaker for the opening of MWW Part II on Thursday evening. You will not want to miss his presentation, Mastering the In-person Pitch.? This is a chance for Part II participants to practice their ?agent pitch.?? Chuck will critique the pitch for all to hear. Individuals can pitch or simply attend to listen in on other pitches. It?s an opportunity for writers to rehearse their elevator pitch before sitting face-to-face with agents. This session targets fiction and nonfiction writers, both novice and intermediate; and it breaks down what needs to be in a pitch, and what NOT to include in a pitch. Chuck will listen to sample pitches to help you prepare for your pitch with an agent on Friday or Saturday.

New this year, MWW offers a Query Critique with Chuck Sambuchino (or Jane Friedman). For an additional fee of $35, you can meet for a 10-minute one-on-one consultation with either Chuck or Jane. The deadline is July 1st, so register NOW if you want to take advantage of this great opportunity!

MWW intern Linda Taylor recently interviewed Chuck about his appearance at this summer?s workshop.

Q. First and most important, my husband and I have a few garden gnomes in our yard, several around our house, and one on the flag out front that says ?Welcome Gnome.? I assume?we should be worried?

Very worried. Gnomes cannot be trusted under any circumstances. These gnomes outside are no doubt probing your outer defenses at this very minute, looking for weaknesses.

Q. Second, and more on a serious note, how does such an unusual and interesting?idea like that become a book? What do you tell potential authors about their ideas for books?even the really unusual ideas??(After all, someone thought putting Jane Austen with zombies would be a good idea . . .)

Nonfiction books simply need three elements to come to life: 1) a unique or interesting idea, 2) proof that an audience exists to buy it, and 3) an author with platform who can sell books. Even very unusual ideas, such as GNOME, can come to life, as long as those three elements are in place. From a writing perspective, you would pitch a book on New York architecture the same way you would pitch one on a history of unicorns: by addressing elements 1, 2 and 3.

Q. Briefly describe your journey as a writer?from your bio on your blog, you appear to have done a lot?of types of writing?from newspapers and magazines, to writing scripts, to writing articles and books (the latter ranging from resource manuals to humor). When did you first decide to become a writer and how did your path lead you to where you are today?

In high school, I was always the one in the group who could tell a story the best. I didn?t realize it, but that was the origin of me as a writer. In college, I majored in public relations and then decided I didn?t want a job in PR, so I took an entry-level position with a weekly newspaper when out of school. I got promoted to reporter and also started freelancing for magazines on the side. This gave me some writing cred when I applied to Writer?s Digest Books. Once I joined WD books, I started writing plays and books, and saw success with both. During the day, I am an editor for WD Books, and during the night, I write humor books and screenplays. (That?s the short version, but no one would have the desire, nor patience to read the long version.)

Q. What advice, then, do you have for young writers? for older writers?

I could speak on this question for one week straight and still have advice to give. But I will say this: No matter if you are old or young, some across-the-board pieces of advice for writers include 1) keep moving forward and do not give up, 2) build your writer platform and make connections with other people, and 3) always write the best book possible, because the cream rises to the top.

Q. At the Midwest Writers Workshop, you?re teaching on several topics, including ?Mastering the In-Person Pitch.? That?s probably one of the most frightening parts of being a writer?working on a computer composing pages is one thing, having to then do a ?sales job? in order to get that book published is quite another. What do you say to allay those fears and help even the most introverted writer?

I will cover the nuts & bolts of all this in my speech at the event. But writers should know that agents understand how nervous writers get, so they?re pretty patient with everything. Also, pitching a book means following a step-by-step formula. Once you know what to address, then it?s all a matter of filling in the blanks.

Q. Another session topic is ?Chapter 1 Do?s and Don?ts.? What?s the worst way to start a book? Do you have an example (beyond Snoopy?s ?It was a dark and stormy night . . .?)?

Avoid descriptions of the weather. Don?t start with a dream. Try not to be inside of a character?s head for very long or at all.

Q. Your third topic is ?The Business of Scriptwriting.? Did you find it to be an easy or natural transition to scriptwriting from all of the other types of writing you do? What is most rewarding and/or most challenging about scriptwriting?

?Scriptwriting? means writing plays and/or screenplays. I wrote plays before I did anything else. Now I?m trying screenplays. It?s an unusual transition, but there are upsides. When your work becomes a play, then the written dialogue is king, and it?s very rewarding to hear an audience erupt in laughter or be as quiet as can be when listening to your words. The reward with screenwriting is writing in a visual medium, and that the pay is much better than most writing assignments.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to add, which might include hints on your philosophy/approach to writing and/or your teaching style?

Not really. I teach at a lot of writers conferences. I love meeting writers. I am happy to talk with anyone at the event who has a question or five about their journey. I will see you all soon!

Note: Chuck?s Part II Sessions:

  • Chapter 1 Dos and Don?ts ? This workshop examines that all-important Chapter 1.? It spends a lot of time going over what not to do-listing clich?s and overused techniques that repeatedly pop up in chapter 1 manuscripts, with comments from agents and editors alike. Following a discussion of agent pet peeves, the workshop addresses what writers should be doing to draw readers in.
  • Start Here: How to Get Your Book Published Panel [Cathy Day, moderator]; with Jane Friedman, Kathleen Rooney, JL Stermer
  • The Business of Scriptwriting: You?ve Written a Play or Screenplay-Now What? ? This workshop examines what writers need to do if they?ve finished that play or screenplay and don?t know what to do now.? We?ll address targeting markets, getting plays read/workshopped, writing script queries, the difference between agents and managers, and more.? Everything is discussed, from writing and rewriting to contests and dealing with directors. Handouts provided.? It?s not a session about craft; it?s a session about business-for writers who have a script and no idea what to do with it.

Engineering Conferences International

The aim of this conference is to bring together scientists from diverse disciplines, who are working on nonstoichiometric compounds (oxides, nitrides, oxynitrides, chalcogenides, intermetallics, etc.).

Traditionally, the effects of stoichiometry deviations in oxides were investigated by those looking to understand and control the electrical, diffusional, and in many cases, the mechanical properties of these materials, with the aim of using them as solid oxide fuel cell electrodes, as battery electrodes, as sensors, as permeation membranes, and in various other electrochemical reactors. Complex oxides that exhibit nonstoichiometry are now also employed for high-temperature thermoelectrics, all-oxide electronics, high speed photonics and switching, memory and magnetoresistive devices. These and other oxides are also being developed as electrodes for energy conversion and photovoltaic applications.

Furthermore, driven by the semiconductor industry interest has also expanded to include nitrides, chalcogenides, oxynitrides, oxychalcogenides, etc. Given the diverse fields of applications, it is clear that a truly international conference devoted specifically to compounds that display nonstoichiometry will allow scientists from these various fields to learn from the other fields and from other approaches, to assess the state of the art, and to discuss future developments.

Outline

This conference will cover all aspects of nonstoichiometry in inorganic compounds. Topics will span from fundamental theory to advanced characterization and device demonstrations at both the macro- and nano-scale.

The conference will last four and a half days and each half day session will consist of two keynote talks, followed by shorter presentations on current research topics germane to the keynote talks. There will also be two poster sessions.

Contributions that include one of the following aspects are welcome:

Bulk defect properties
Surface/Interface defect properties
Mass and charge transport
Structural studies
Thin films and coatings
Theory and simulation of defects
Nanoscale phenomena
Materials synthesis and processing
Materials and devices for information conversion and storage
Materials and devices for energy conversion and storage
New techniques and methods for characterization
We plan sessions on the following specific topics, depending on the submission of abstracts:

Fundamental studies of defects
SOFC materials (Symposium in honor of the 65th birthday of J. Mizusaki)
Energy Materials (high-temperature thermoelectrics, photocatalysis, photovoltaics, transparent conductive oxides, )
Materials for Lithium-ion batteries
Interfaces, surfaces and nanosize effects
Materials for information storage
Piezo- and ferroelectrics
Emerging subjects: New materials and future applications

Conference Venue

Sicily, Italy

Thanks to its geographical position, at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily has always been a crossroads for different people and cultures. From the grumbling, lava-filled volcano of Mount Etna to the ancient Greek temples of Agrigento, Sicily is a land of natural and man-made beauty.

The countryside is filled with nature reserves and vineyards, all in a near-perfect climate, mild all year round, with an average rainfall among the lowest in Europe. But Sicily is not just about nature. The Greek temples, the Byzantine, Norman and Roman monuments, the cities of Palermo, Taormina, Catania, Siracusa and Agrigento, are places where the past and the present blend into an idyllic ensemble. Sicily surprises visitors at every step with its gorgeous beauty and immense cultural heritage. A huge number of castles and manors, private villas, ancient chapels and churches are there to be explored.

The town of Taormina (53km North of Catania, 53km South of Messina, 250km East of Palermo) is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea and is Sicily's most famous resort area. Such writers as Goethe and D. H. Lawrence, besotted with the glories of Taormina's panoramic views of the bays beyond and Mount Etna looming in the background, spread word of the area's charm.

Capo dei Greci, Taormina

The conference will be held at the Capo Dei Greci Hotel Resort and Spa. Located on the side of a mountain just outside of Taormina (7 km), the hotel has amazing views of the sea. The hotel has 210 rooms spread through several blocks of buildings. There are many outdoor terraces for events, all with wonderful views of the sea. There are three pools, tennis courts and a large, newly renovated spa. The conference center is housed in a separate building with modern audio/visual capabilities. There are four restaurants and three cafes/ bars. Rooms are air conditioned and have satellite television, mini bar, safe box and telephone. Wifi is available in the conference area.

For photos and more information please visit the hotel web site: http://www.hotelcapodeigreci.it/default.asp?cms=10&lingua=2

Engineering Conferences International (ECI) is a global engineering conferences program, originally established in 1962, that provides opportunities for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers and scientists from many disciplines.

The format of the weeklong research conference provides morning and late afternoon or evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings, informal discussions, and/or recreation. This format is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the development of the meeting. We believe that the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums.

All participants are expected both to attend the entire conference and to contribute actively to the discussions. The recording/photographing of lectures and presentations is forbidden. As ECI conferences take place in an informal atmosphere, casual clothing is the usual attire.
