Two more Yosemite visitors stricken with deadly virus

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Two more visitors to Yosemite National Park have been diagnosed with a deadly rodent-borne virus, raising the total number of people infected in the unusual outbreak to six, California public health officials said Thursday.

Two men died from the rare lung disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and four other people survived the rodent-borne illness. Most of the victims are believed to have contracted the virus while staying in tent-style cabins this summer in a popular camping area called Curry Village.

Park officials earlier this week shut down 91 insulated tent-cabins after finding deer mice, which carry the disease and can burrow through pencil-sized holes, nesting between the double walls of the structures.

Park authorities have notified 2,900 parties of visitors who rented the tent cabins from June through August that they may have been exposed to hantavirus.

Four who were infected at Yosemite this summer slept in the insulated tent cabins. One slept elsewhere in Curry Village, located in a valley beneath the iconic Half Dome rock formation, and the sixth case remains under investigation.

One man from northern California and another from Pennsylvania died. Three of the victims have recovered, and one remains hospitalized, the state Department of Public Health said in a press release.

Experts continued to investigate the outbreak, and the number of cases could rise as visitors who were exposed to the virus but have not yet shown symptoms fall ill, the agency said.

Nearly 4 million people visit Yosemite each year, attracted to the park's dramatic scenery and hiking trails. Roughly 70 percent of those visitors congregate in Yosemite Valley, where Curry Village is located.

Hantavirus is carried in rodent feces, urine and saliva that dries out and mixes with dust that can be inhaled by humans, especially in small, confined spaces with poor ventilation.

People also can be infected by eating contaminated food, touching contaminated surfaces or being bitten by infected rodents.

STARTS WITH FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS

The virus starts out causing flu-like symptoms, including headache, fever, muscle ache, shortness of breath and cough. Initial symptoms may appear up to six weeks after exposure and can lead to severe breathing difficulties and death.

Although there is no cure for hantavirus, treatment after early detection through blood tests can save lives. The virus, which has never been known to be transmitted between humans, kills 38 percent of those it infects.

"The earlier it's caught and supportive care is given, the better the survival rate," said Dr. Vicki Kramer, chief of vector-borne diseases at the state Public Health Department.

Dr. Charles Chiu, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, said he made a habit of airing out his tent-cabin before occupying it as a precaution against possible virus-carrying dust particles when he stayed in Curry Village a few years ago.

But even Chiu said he was surprised to learn that a hantavirus had killed two people and stricken others who slept in the same structures this summer.

"It wasn't something even I had thought of at the time," Chiu, who studies hantavirus, told Reuters.

Hantavirus previously infected two Yosemite visitors, one in 2000 and another in 2010, but at higher elevations.

Melanie Norall of Palo Alto, California, is monitoring her 8-year-old daughter's every sniffle. They stayed in a cabin outside Yosemite's north entrance at the end of July and awoke to mice scurrying and eating nuts out of their luggage.

The vast majority of hantavirus victims are young and middle-age adults, Chiu said, probably because they are mostly likely to engage in activities that would readily expose them, such as chopping and carrying fire wood or sweeping the floors.

"The message should not be you should stop camping. The important thing is general awareness of this disease and to avoid wild rodents in general," Chiu said.

Since it was first recognized in 1993, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome has been diagnosed in 64 people in California. Nationwide, the virus sickened 587 people between 1993 and 2011, according to government data.

Greek Golf Holidays ? The Costa Navarino Resort : 19th Hole ? The ...

costa-navarino-golf-resortFor those of us who live in, let?s say, an unpredictable climate, jetting off to sunnier climes of holiday hotspots such as Greece has long been the done thing when the time comes for a well deserved holiday. The islands of Crete and Corfu have long been synonymous with beach holidays, offering a relaxed atmosphere, tranquil beaches, and endless restaurants and bars where fresh seafood and a shot or two of ouzo can be sampled by holiday makers looking to enjoy a traditional taste of Greece but it is the southern region of Peloponnese where golfers should be aiming their tee shots.

This is one of the most culturally-rich regions of Greece with 4,000 years of traceable history including Olympia, the sanctuary of Zeus and site of the ancient Olympic Games. Time seems to have stood still in much of the Peloponnese, and even in the larger towns the pace of life and the people are more traditionally Greek than in some of the more touristy islands.

?

costa-navarino

Costa Navarino is situated on the Peloponnese coastline and even in the high season you have a good chance of finding your very own private cove in which to relax away from the golf course.

?

But what of the golf? Well, in Peloponnese golf is in its infant stages with just the one resort catering for golfers?but what a resort it is!

The Costa Navarino Resort, managed by Troon Golf, is part of a truly extraordinary development in one of the most attractive and undeveloped parts of Greece, offering magnificent views of the Ionian Sea and incorporating luxurious accommodations with two outstanding golf courses including one of Bernhard Langer?s most impressive designs to date and a fantastic Robert Trent Jones course as well.

The Dunes Course is the gem in Costa Navarino?s crown and will thrill all who play it. Designed by former Masters Champion and winning Ryder Cup captain, Bernhard Langer, this course offers breathtaking views over the nearby sea and the river that snakes it way through the resort; even if you?re slightly off your game you can?t fail to enjoy a walk around this corner of Greece!

?

costa-navarino-westin-resort

The accommodations at Costa Navarino boast views to rival those found on the two outstanding golf courses.

?

The Dunes Course is primarily a resort course but a total yardage of 6,755 yards coupled with a number of more sympathetic tee positions will ensure every golfer from the weekend warrior to the enviable experts will find a suitably enjoyable challenge. Positioned close to the sea, a number of the holes on the Dunes Course have a subtle links like feel to them with the remaining inland holes offering a taste of a more traditional Greek landscape with olive trees and citrus groves flanking the gently undulating fairways.

The Bay Course on the other hand offers a different challenge to that of the Dunes Course which in the mind of all at Your Golf Travel is the sign of a top class golf resort. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, the Bay Course measures a more modest 6,299 yards from the tips and as such is a more relaxing course?perhaps the one to play the night after one too many ouzos! The imaginative layout calls for a more strategic approach than the Dunes and also offers amazing panoramic views of the sea and nearby mountains. In fact, several holes play directly along the coastline and two directly overlook the historic bay of Navarino.

?

costa-navarino-golf-courses

The Dunes and the Bay courses provide the golfer with great variety, taking them on a journey both through the lush hills and along the idyliic coastline of the Peloponnese region.

?

As with all courses managed by Troon Golf, the conditioning if the courses at Costa Navarino is exemplary with manicured fairways and well maintained rough, not to mention silky smooth putting surfaces, constant throughout. But it is not just the quality of the courses that is impressive here. Troon Golf provide a truly top drawer country club experience with personal meet and greets upon arrival and a number of amenities and services that ensure a VIP golfing experience from start to finish. In terms of location, quality and the total package, playing golf at Costa Navarino, whether it?s on the Navarino Dunes or Navarino Bay course, takes some beating. Thankfully, we can also report that the quality of the golf is also reflected throughout the rest of the resort, making Costa Navarino a truly memorable place to enjoy some time away on a golf holiday.

Accommodation comes in the form of the excellent Westin Resort and the impossibly luxurious Romanos Luxury Collection. Both feature an endless array of amenities that will ensure your total comfort throughout your golf holiday and thanks to their spectacular locations ? the Westin Resort enjoys a picturesque hillside location and the Romanos Luxury Collection sits amid lush olive groves, overlooking the Ionian Sea ? offer fantastic views of the surrounding countryside which can be enjoyed from private balconies or terraces and even private infinity pools.

?

costa-navarino-villa

Many of the ground floor accommodations in both the Westin Resort and the Romanos Luxury Collection boast private infinity pools.

?

Each accommodation option offers its guests a multitude of dining options as well, meaning that no matter your taste you will find something that will satisfy your cravings! Leisure facilities are also extensive meaning time away from the golf courses can be as relaxing or as fun filled as you wish. Fire pits provide a great place to relax in the evening while outdoor pools with swim up bars offer a refreshing place to relax after a round of golf. Those looking to really unwind will find sanctuary at the spa and those with an adventurous side will have an endless array of indoor and outdoor leisure pursuits to choose from.

The resort is well placed to provide easy access to the best this intoxicating region has to offer. UNESCO World Heritage List sites, including famous Olympia, Mystras and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, as well as Ancient Messini, the Palace of Nestor, are all within driving distance.

?

costa-navarino-guestroom

The guestrooms at Costa Navarino are luxuriously furnished and infinitely comfortable; a great base for a golf break in the sun.

?

All in all Costa Navarino has no equal in Greece and it certainly holds its own against the finest resorts in Europe. For those who have had their fill of the more traditional golfing hotspots of the Algarve and the Costa del Sol, Greece and Costa Navarino will provide the ultimate golfing experience.

Meet The Galaxy Note II, Samsung?s Most Important Phone Yet

noteThe original Samsung Note was huge -- in both physical size and popularity. Samsung sold over 10 million units of the huge phone, or rather, if you prefer, mini tablet. The Note II is more of the same, really. It sports a much more capable mobile SoC, which should make the Jelly Bean Android build run as smooth as, well, butter. Strangely, the new model features a lower resolution screen than the original, but that likely won't hurt sales. In all, the new Note is like the old Note. Engadget likes what they see so far. That's a good thing. It's still a massive thing, likely too big for some users. But that's fine with Samsung. The Note II shows Samsung's swagger. It might not be the best selling phone in Samsung's lineup, but it's the most important.

Ice Skating at The Rink JCube

Living it up at The Rink, JCube

Faced with the recent sweltering hot weather, I did something I have not done for almost 7 years ? I went ice-skating to escape the heat. Ice skating was never really on my radar since the ice rinks in Singapore were far and few, and so small I felt akin to a hamster running in its own exercise wheel ? what?s the fun of going round and round in while trying to avoid the throngs of falling people, I wondered. Furthermore, ice skating felt like an activity only meant for the young, maybe because older folks like clumsy me are likely to fall and break our bones. I took extra effort NOT to fall cos? it?s not the age to be proudly sporting blue-black bruises.

Located at the heart of JCube on Level 3, The Rink recently had its official opening on 12 August 2012. It has a 460 seat gallery and the 60 by 30 metre ice rink (Singapore?s first and only Olympic-size rink) is designed to host international events and competitions for sports such as ice hockey, curling and speed skating. Over 80,000 people have visited The Rink since its soft launch on 2 April 2012, and it will be hosting its first ice hockey league from September 2012.

The Rink is the first sports facility developed under the Singapore Sports Council?s Community/Sports Facilities Scheme which encourages the integration of community or sports facilities in private commercial developments. A national Learn-to-Skate programme has been rolled out to equip participants with foundational skills in ice skating through a progressive five-week course. Those who are more in for the fun can boogie it up at the disco-themed ice skating sessions held on the first and third Fridays of every month.

Barclays hit by fraud probe over Mideast investors

LONDON (AP) ? Scandal-hit Barclays bank says it's facing yet another investigation ? this one relating to the billions it raised from Middle Eastern investors back in 2008.

The bank said Wednesday that Britain's Serious Fraud Office was looking into whether Barclays was open enough about what it had paid advisers when it raised more than 5 billion pounds of emergency capital at the height of the global financial crisis.

The private lifeline helped Barclays avoid the humiliating government bailouts that the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds were forced to accept after high-flying executives overloaded the banks with unsustainable amounts of debt.

Barclays' corporate reputation is already under siege after scandals over selling small businesses complex financial products they didn't need and revelations that the bank fixed a key market interest rate.

1st trial to begin in alleged rapes of Texas girl

(AP) ? The case shocked and divided the small Southeast Texas town where authorities allege an 11-year-old girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted over a period of months in 2010 by a group of 20 males.

Now the first trial stemming from the case is set to be heard by a jury.

Opening statements in the trial of Eric McGowen were scheduled for Wednesday in Liberty.

McGowen is among 14 adults charged in the case. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutors and McGowen's defense attorney have declined to comment because of a gag order in the case.

Authorities say the girl was assaulted at least five times between mid-September and early December 2010 by males ranging in age from a middle school student to a 28-year-old. The alleged rapes took place in Cleveland, located about 45 miles northeast of Houston. Prosecutors say McGowen, 20, assaulted the girl in October 2010. The trial is being held in the nearby county seat of Liberty.

The investigation began in December 2010, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he had seen a lurid cellphone video that showed the girl being raped in an abandoned trailer.

Those charged included two top athletes at the local high school and adults with criminal records.

The case brought unflattering attention to Cleveland, a town of 9,000 people, after some residents suggested the girl was in part responsible for what happened, saying she wore makeup, looked older and wasn't properly supervised by her parents. Other community residents, as well as groups from outside of town, sharply criticized those suggestions.

The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

Two other adults have previously pleaded guilty, with one receiving a 15-year prison term and the other awaiting sentencing. Six juveniles who were charged also have previously pleaded guilty. They received 7-year prison terms, but their sentences were suspended and they were put on probation for that amount of time.

Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Vito Technology makes major update to Star Walk - 5 Star ...

Vito Technology has updated one of their two flagship Astronomy apps, Star Walk, with a significant update this morning. ?The new 6.0 version brings a completely rebuilt information section that has a new layout and revised information. ?That new information includes things like short facts, a new image gallery, overview note(s), orbital and physical characteristics, magnitude and elevation and planetary structure.

Other improvements in this version include a new gallery for Picture of the Day which has a cleaner and simpler layout with iPhoto-like folders both from ESA (European Space Agency) and ESO (European Southern Observatory). ?Sharing is alsoStar Walk for iPad introduced with the ability to share to Facebook, Twitter, Email and the ability to print or save what you are viewing to your Camera Roll.

Star Walk is also compatible with AirPlay so you can wirelessly display the app via your AppleTV to a HDTV display. ?This is a?huge feature for educators as the can show planets, stars and other heavenly bodies in real time thanks to the augmented reality of Star Walk on a large screen, saving having to crowd around the iPad or iPhone itself.

Star Walk is in my opinion the best Astronomy app in the App Store today. ?It is great for both learning and teaching and even for the casual stargazer, it provides a depth of knowledge at your fingertips.

Star Walk for iPhone is $2.99 and Star Walk for iPad is $4.99.

Recovery and Continuity The Difference - Danny's Pizza Streamwood

?

?

March 10th, 2012

?

In the past handful of years there have been a big quantity of natural disasters causing untold amounts of harm, setting many businesses back years if not decades. There isn&rsquot a lot we can do to keep away from these disasters, but we can be ready for them. Is your company prepared?

?

Most businesses have at least standard protection from emergencies and disasters in place. The most common forms of protection are insurance, server and computer backup, and basic preparations as required by law. Even though these protective measures are thought to be sufficient for most businesses, there is nevertheless a chance a disaster will strike, leaving your company in the lurch.

?

In the recent months and years an increasing number of occurrences, such as the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, have brought on widespread disruption to companies. To counter this, two business initiatives have risen to the forefront: Disaster Recovery (DR) and Organization Continuity Organizing (BCP). In reality, these two terms have turn into typical buzzwords, a speedy world wide web search returns more than 53 million hits on organization continuity alone. The problem is that a lot of pros are unclear on what each really is. It&rsquos important to be clear on every topic and the basic steps to take to be ready for any disaster.

?

What is a Enterprise Continuity Plan (BCP)? BCP, initial seen for the duration of the Y2K scare of the late 90s, is a program that covers the way an organization prepares for and maintains all important organization functions. BC organizing is comprised of activities that guarantee upkeep, stability, and recoverability of service prior to, in the course of, and right after a disaster. The program is generally set up on a day-to-day basis, and covers the entire organization.

?

It&rsquos important to have a BCP for your organization simply because if something happens and you can&rsquot deliver to your clients, they will go to yet another firm.

?

What is Disaster Recovery? Disaster Recovery is regarded as a element of the overall continuity program that focuses on the technical side of the enterprise, including elements such as data backup and recovery. Feel of BCP as an umbrella and DR is below the umbrella &mdash if you don&rsquot have a disaster recovery plan, the overall umbrella is more or less useless.

?

What Should be in Your DR and BCP Plans? These plans each share a quantity of similarities, typically following the same actions involving the exact same components. Both plans really should incorporate:

  1. An operational plan for a number of disasters that could happen in your geographical region. The plans should cover occurrences as modest as computer hardware errors and as significant as huge natural disasters.
  2. A succession strategy for you or your leading management.
  3. Training for substitute staff on essential tasks.
  4. Cross education of your staff on the fundamentals of different roles so they will be in a position to take more than if need to have be.
  5. A communication strategy focused on diverse crises, such as approaches of communicating if networks are down.
  6. Off-web site meeting areas for staff and managers.
  7. A focus on safety. Foster partnerships and communication with neighborhood and emergency response services: Fire, Police, National Guard, Search and Rescue. Ideally, all workers must at least know basic 1st help. If you have personnel who are volunteer members of local Emergency Response Services, ask them to be responsible for teams.
  8. Day-to-day plans to backup your Enterprise systems, along with instruction and testing of recovery of systems.
  9. Instruction and testing of all employees to practice recovery actions in scenarios as realistic as attainable.

It&rsquos critical that you conduct regular tests of your systems and processes, and make alterations as essential. Be aware that your enterprise is constantly altering and so should your Business Continuity and Disaster Recover Plans. With a meticulously prepared and practiced program, your business really should be ready to face a variety of disasters with minimal downtime. If you would like to know much more about Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery please contact us at www.lgnetworksinc.com.

VanHatten Writing Services: Book Publishing Options

As an editor I am asked by authors...What are my options for publishing my book?

While I can't tell them the best option, I can give them choices.

You can sell your manuscript to a publishing house. Definitely check with publishing houses before you sign anything. Typically the royalty is around 8%. If your main objective is to have a book to use in your promotion or to showcase you as a guru in your field, this is probably the way to go for you.

You can self publish your manuscript as a paperback book. You will make around 50% profit margin, give or take a little. Let's say you are a professional speaker or you give talks about your business. This would be the way to go for you. This type of book costs less so you can give it away or offer deals on the book at your speaking engagements.

You can self publish your manuscript as an eBook. Potentially this has the ability for the most profit for you. Why? You can sell it on your own web site as a downloadable PDF and your profit margin is almost 100%.

Keep in mind; you can publish your book in more than one of these ways. Plus, you can publish one eBook and the next book you write could be sold to a publishing house.?

ArtsBeat: New Will.i.am Song Broadcast From Mars

In the first-ever planet-to-planet music broadcast, NASA?s Mars rover, Curiosity, beamed a new song by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas to Earth on Tuesday, playing an mp3 file to an audience of engineers and students at the agency?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

?Why do they say the sky is the limit when I?ve seen the footprints on the moon?? Will.i.am sings in the song, ?Reach for the Stars,? which made its solar system premiere after a 330-million-mile trip, from Earth to Mars and back again. (Alas, any nearby Martians were out of luck: the rover does not have speakers to broadcast music to its surrounding landscape, and the thin Martian air would have distorted the sound.)

The song debut, part of Will.i.am?s efforts to cheerlead for science and mathematics education, did not require any advances in space technology, but perhaps reflected a more media-savvy approach by the space agency in making its work seem glamorous. The singer was among a parade of celebrities who descended on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Aug. 5 to watch Curiosity, an automobile-sized mobile science laboratory, touch down on Mars; others included the actor Morgan Freeman, the director Barry Sonnenfeld, the comedian Seth Green and the actress Nichelle Nichols (who played Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek).

But this is not the first time that NASA has dabbled in music from outer space. The radio emissions of Saturn, recorded by the Cassini spacecraft, were shifted into audible frequencies, and the Kronos Quartet then incorporated the space sounds into a composition called ?Sun Rings.? In 2008, NASA celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Beatles song ?Across the Universe? by transmitting it into deep space.

So far, the galaxy appears ungrateful. ?Obviously, deep space hasn?t sent us anything back,? a NASA spokeswoman noted.

I'M A SONIC BOOMER: New or old life?

As we wandered around the golf course, talking about life, one of my friends started talking about coping with life after the death of a spouse.? Most of my friends have been in long term relationships (over 40 plus years) with their partners and as we age the loss of a life partner is a serious issue for us.? My friends realized that?I had to consider this possibility when my wife was ? ?sick few years ago, and were thus interested in my views on the topic.

One friend said," I don't know what I would do."?

"After the mourning you would have a new life", one of my other friends suggested

?"I don't, know if I would because I would still have my old life" ?he replied.?As we continued to? play golf, we talked about the issue of trying to reconnect to our old selves.

Our golf course wisdom after about 9 holes, ?was that after 40 plus years in a relationship a person really were not sure who they really are or want to be because for most of their life, they have been in a partnership and as such the person did not look at life as an individual might.?That sense of unease of being uncoupled and the sense of loss would?unsettle the journey to find one's self.?

One of my friends went on, "I would still have the same people who depend on me, I would still have the same issues at work,?My own personal demons would still be there, but now I would have to fight them on my own. How would I know?it is time to move on, sell my home and move on and start a new relationship."?

We were not able to answer that question but?as?friends we just listened, pretended to think and tried to look wise, and soon the conversation drifted back to?the latest shot and how beautiful the day was--(my friends and I look at life's serious issues, but only for very short periods of time,as I think do most men of my age :-).?

The conversation got me thinking about change and renewal after the loss of a spouse.?Change is hard and coping with life after the loss of a loved one of many years is not easy. After 30 to 40 years in a relationship, how does one start the process of reconnecting with yourself as a single? ?For those of us ?in long term relationships we have for 30 years or more have not considered ourselves as a separate entity, our life has been intertwined with another.

Joan P. Hubbard, is the author of The Grieving Self and she?believes that those who can reconnect and reconstruct their independent self after severe loss will experience emotional healing more quickly and begin a new path toward a viable life. In her forward Hubbard writes, ?Grief is a journey most of us are destined to take. We will experience grief at a loss of our physical parts or the abilities of our bodies to perform, the loss of important relationships (family and friends) through death or attrition, loss of jobs and opportunities?loss of some aspect of what we know to be our self.?

The Grieving Process consists of five steps:
1) Denial
This first step is when we try to deny the death of our loved one, or in this case, our spouse.
2) Anger
You'll probably be angry at your spouse for dying and leaving you. Or, you'll be mad at "the world" because it happened.
3) Bargaining
Bargaining usually is tried with God, or another spiritual being. You may ask what you can do to reverse the loss of your husband or wife.
4) Depression or Sadness
This step of the Grieving Process is self-explanatory. Besides feeling depressed or sad, you may still feel angry.
5) Acceptance
When you've reached this level, you will have accepted the fact that your spouse has died. The feelings of anger and sadness that you've had have begun to ease up.

Here's a tip to help you decide when you are ready to move on, after your spouse dies: if you don't complete these five steps first, you won't be ready. Easy to say, tough to remember if you are in mourning.

You can't start reconnecting to yourself and begin a new life while you're still grieving for your late spouse. Mourning will interfere with beginning any?healthy, happy relationships.?Mourning is not measured in time, nor is it a sequential journey. Once the mourning has finished then the work or reconnecting can begin. Part of the process of finding a new life, is the discarding of the old, very hard to let go for most.?

Friends are important in the process and true friends will allow for the trial and error that happens as we try to see where we now fit. As we move toward finding out who we now are, we may go through some interesting and (to our friends) strange journeys. I believe that in this journey we will make mistakes, but the journey, the mistakes,?are needed to find our balance.?

How to Build a Planet: Heavy Metals Are Key Ingredients

Planets may not be able to form without a heaping helping of heavy elements such as silicon, titanium and magnesium, a new study suggests.

Stars that host planets have higher concentrations of such "metals" ? astronomer-speak for elements heavier than hydrogen and helium ? compared to iron than do planetless stars, the study found. ??

"To form planets, one needs heavy elements," said lead author Vardan Adibekyan, of the Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto in Portugal.

Connected at birth

Planets coalesce from the disk of dust and gas left over after the birth of their parent star. According to the leading theory of planet formation, the core accretion model, small particles clump together, growing larger and larger until they produce protoplanets.

Scientists have long suspected that stars with higher metallicities are more likely to have planets orbiting them. Iron has long been a primary indicator.

"Usually, in stellar physics, people use the iron content as a proxy of overall metallicity," Adibekyan told SPACE.com via email.

Studying sunlike stars?

Adibekyan and his colleagues studied 1,111 sunlike stars, 135 of which host planets. They analyzed spectroscopic observations made by the European Southern Observatory's High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher.

The team focused especially on so-called "alpha elements," which are produced by adding a helium nucleus ? also known as an alpha particle ? to another atom in the interior of stars. For example, adding an alpha particle to a carbon atom results in an oxygen atom.

The scientists found that the planet-harboring stars have high metallicities, containing lots of alpha elements like silicon, titanium and magnesium. Further, the ratio of such heavy elements to the amount of iron was consistently higher in stars with planets, with the greatest discrepancy observed for magnesium.

While affirming the importance of stellar metallicity in planet formation, the new study also implies that metals other than iron may play a more crucial role than previously considered, particularly for low-mass planets, researchers said.

"Although terrestrial planets can be found at low-iron regimes, they are mostly enhanced by other metals," Adibekyan said.

The results were published in the July issue of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Graphic D-Signs, Inc. - Small Business Advertising Agency? - NJ ...

By Danielle Avenoso / Senior Brand Strategist & Account Manager,?NJ Marketing Agency?Graphic D-Signs, Inc.
Are you a small business owner trying to accelerate company growth? If so, here are nine principles you should know about marketing to ensure greater success and drive ROI.? ? 1.???? Empower yourself with knowledge. While it takes time out of your schedule, it?s important to conduct research on your industry, market, direct competitors and consumers. You can never know too much?and you can certainly know too little. Just as athletes prepare for the big game, marketing success requires countless hours of practice. ?

2.???? Know your budget. Identify the investment you want to allocate to your marketing. A good estimate is roughly five percent of your sales. It is critical to establish a budget, because this will allow you to properly and effectively plan your marketing.

3.???? Create an identity. As a company, your brand is one of your greatest assets. It communicates and connects with audiences, and creates passion for your business. Think of your brand as a spokesperson for your company: highlighting your promises and propositions to the consumer. 4.???? Formulate a plan of attack. Too many times, small business owners react instead of thinking about business implications, competitors and consumers. It is more fruitful to formulate a plan of attack, first. What media channels will you leverage to connect with your consumer? If you plan, your strategy will be more effective and your budget will remain efficiently intact. 5.???? Strategy is king. What is the message you want to convey in all marketing components? What service or value do you provide that sets you apart from the competition? This single-minded idea should live throughout all advertising deliverables for an in-sync marketing message. 6.??? Execute your strategy. How will you put your strategy to work? Print? Website? Online banners? Coupons and promotions? Radio? TV? Identify your deliverables and tools of attack.? 8.???? Track. Measure. Record. Accountability is key, so remember to monitor and gauge the effectiveness of your budget and advertising campaign. By tracking leads via different media channels, you can identify those channels that give you the best ROI versus channels that need to be further optimized.

9.???? Improvise! By utilizing what you?ve learned from data tracking, you can change-as-you-go. Proper measurement helps you discover how to better spend your budget, which channels to remove from the media plan, and which channels to try in the future.

Lance Armstrong Quits, the Rise of the Hillbilly, and Creepy Internet Ads

?Lance Armstrong Loses (Almost) Everything: In throwing away his seven Tour de France titles, he?s keeping what he prizes most: his righteous indignation,? by Josh Levin. Charged with steroid use by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Lance Armstrong chose not to confront his accusers?which means he?ll likely be stripped of his seven championship titles. But, Levin contends, the cycling star can at least preserve a glimmer of a shadow of a doubt about whether or not he cheated, a lucky break that probably matters more to him than a closet full of yellow jerseys.

?Vowel Movement: How Americans near the Great Lakes are radically changing the sound of English,? by Rob Mifsud. Regional dialects aren?t disappearing; they?re flourishing, and none more so than the Nah-then Ste-ate accent, with its extra short vowel sound. Mifsud forecasts more shifts in pronunciation in cities around the Great Lakes and explains why the changes haven?t yet penetrated minority communities.?

What is it about politics that entices men who have neglectful or absent fathers? YoungSmith floats the theory that derelict dads force their sons to be leaders from a young age while rousing in them an insatiable thirst for love and approval.

??The Rape Skeptic: Todd Akin didn?t misspeak. He showed what he thinks: that rape is too broadly interpreted and reported,? by William Saletan. Jumping off Akin?s careful apology??The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold??Saletan argues that the lawmaker in fact holds false, paranoid views about what rape means and how it?s prosecuted. (AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire on Saturday, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 others in one of the deadliest disasters ever to hit the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, among the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

The explosion shattered walls of nearby shops, ripped out windows from homes and left the surrounding streets covered with rubble and twisted scraps of metal.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. "This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said on state television late Saturday that at least 39 people were killed by the explosion, up from the earlier death toll of 26. He said that the dead included 18 National Guard troops and that six of the bodies had not yet been identified. Other officials said earlier that the dead included a 10-year-old boy.

In a neighborhood next to the refinery, shopkeeper Yolimar Romero said she was at her computer when a shock wave swept over the area shortly after 1 a.m.

"At that instant, the whole house shook as if it were an earthquake," she said. "The windows went flying off with their frames and everything."

Electricity was knocked out, leaving Romero in the dark and her house filled with smoke. She found a flashlight and started looking for her husband and three children.

Outside on the street, the family saw scattered hunks of brick walls and ruins of a National Guard post and about 20 other homes. Bodies were being pulled from buildings down the street.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.

Flames reaching nearly 100 feet into the night air still crackled almost 20 hours after the explosion occurred, giving off searing heat felt by the residents of the neighborhood located approximately 1,000 feet from the refinery.

"This does not seem to be getting any better, I see and feel more and more flames," said Francisco Rojas, a 29-year-old taxi driver from the neighborhood as he loaded some of his belongings into a truck.

"I have a young daughter and my wife, and we don't want to take the risk of dying here," Rojas added.

Officials said firefighters had largely controlled the fire at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where flames were still visible on Saturday night after billowing dark smoke all day.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a natural gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said.

Images shortly after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky, and injured survivors on a stretcher and in a wheelchair. The bloodied bodies of victims were loaded onto pickup trucks.

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to determine the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor was appointed to lead the investigation and troops were deployed to the area.

While the cause of the disaster remains unclear, some oil workers and critics of Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company.

"We warned that something was going to happen, a catastrophic event," said Ivan Freites, secretary general of a 1,200-member union of oil and natural gas industry workers in Falcon state where the refinery is located. He spoke in a telephone interview from an area near the refinery, where he could see the flames raging in the distance.

The refinery complex's general manager, Jesus Luongo, denied that a lack of maintenance was to blame, saying in the past three years more than $6 billion has been invested in maintaining the country's refineries.

Ramirez said the explosion hit an area of storage tanks, damaging nine tanks.

"All of the events happened very quickly," Ramirez said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

The oil minister said that supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery and that firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to billow.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Ramirez said the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We want to tell the country that we have sufficient inventories of fuel. We have 10 days of inventory of fuel," Ramirez said. He said the country's other refineries were operating at full capacity and would be able to "deal with any situation in our domestic market."

An official of the state oil company, known as PDVSA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

In terms of international oil markets, the disaster is not likely to cause much of a ripple, said Jason Schenker, an energy analyst and president of Austin, Texas-based Prestige Economics LLC. Noting that other refinery accidents and shutdowns regularly occur around the world, he said: "There's likely to be relatively limited impact on global crude or product pricing."

"The real tragedy," he said, "is that these events continue to happen, not just in Venezuela but everywhere. It is a dangerous business."

Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former PDVSA executive, called the tragedy "probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years."

"Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," Coronel said. Considering the overall record, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management," he said.

The labor leader Freites, who has worked at the refinery for 29 years, said workers had repeatedly alerted state oil company officials to problems that they feared could lead to an accident. "We've been complaining about problems and risks, including fires, broken pipes and a lack of spare parts," Freites said.

One opposition group comprised of former PDVSA employees, Gente del Petroleo, or Oil People, said it could not yet pass judgment on the cause of the explosion. But it but noted there had been ample concerns about lack of maintenance and poor management.

The group said in a statement that since 2003, 79 other serious accidents have been reported at the Paraguana Refinery Complex, collectively killing a total of 19 workers and injuring 67 others.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who is challenging Chavez in the country's Oct. 7 presidential election, expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

"We Venezuelans are one, and we grow in the face of this type of situations," Capriles said.
