95% Stories We Tell

All Critics (60) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (56) | Rotten (3)

After you see it, you'll be practically exploding with questions - and with awe.

Stories We Tell is just the latest reminder of nonfiction film's current, endlessly innovative state. That's a story worth savoring.

It's a relationship drama spanning three decades, a detective mystery, an essay on the nature of memory, and a critique of our need to process messy human life into streamlined narrative arcs even at the cost of oversimplifying.

Sarah might have wrapped up this documentary after her parentage is revealed about 70 minutes in, yet it continues for another 50 as she ruminates over the tale,... her engrossing personal story gradually devolving into an exercise in self-regard.

Stories told again and again have a way of neatening things up. Stories have a way of ironing out the wrinkles. Polley lets the wrinkles remain.

Sarah Polley's documentary is a startling mixture of private memoir, public inquiry, and conjuring trick.

I could not love it more.

As one watches it, certain questions may arise. But don't worry - the answers are fascinating.

While I can understand any reluctance to view the personal business of others, Polley moves beyond the routine of therapy to shape an expressive and beautifully considerate documentary.

With Stories We Tell, actress-turned-director Sarah Polley has proven herself a consummate filmmaker, transforming an incredible personal story into a playful and profound investigation into the nature of storytelling itself.

Eventually, the formalistic strictures of the documentary fall away and Polley - her entire family, really - is left facing the reality of the past as the cameras roll.

Polley imaginatively fills in the past through a hybrid of documentary and fiction [for] knowing relevance to oral history, testimonial evidence, and what makes a family.

What I can say is that the movie is dramatically compelling, journalistically fascinating, cinematically profound, and intellectually challenging.

Sheds fascinating light on Polley's art.

Polley mines her own life to strip naked the essence of storytelling, and what it is about folklore that makes it so essential in shaping our perceptions about who we are and where we come from.

Stories We Tell starts out as a simple investigation into the life of a mother that director Sarah Polley barely knew and slowly turns into a documentary that is as good as any movie you will see this year.

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? After years of heartbreakingly close calls, Arvind Mahankali conquered his nemesis, German, to become the champion speller in the English language.

The 13-year-old from Bayside Hills, N.Y., correctly spelled "knaidel," a word for a small mass of leavened dough, to win the 86th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. The bee tested brain power, composure and, for the first time, knowledge of vocabulary.

Arvind finished in third place in both 2011 and 2012, and both times, he was eliminated on German-derived words. This time, he got one German word in the finals, and the winning word was from German-derived Yiddish, eliciting groans and laughter from the crowd. He spelled both with ease.

"The German curse has turned into a German blessing," he said.

Arvind outlasted 11 other finalists, all but one of whom had been to the National Spelling Bee before, in nearly 2 ? hours of tense, grueling competition that was televised nationally. In one round, all nine participants spelled their words correctly.

When he was announced as the winner, Arvind looked upward at the confetti falling upon him and cracked his knuckles, his signature gesture during his bee appearances. He'll take home $30,000 in cash and prizes along with a huge cup-shaped trophy. The skinny teen, clad in a white polo shirt and wire-rimmed glasses pushed down his nose, was joined on stage at the Washington-area hall by his parents and his beaming younger brother.

An aspiring physicist who admires Albert Einstein, Arvind said he would spend more time studying physics this summer now that he's "retired" from the spelling bee.

Arvind becomes the sixth consecutive Indian-American winner and the 11th in the past 15 years, a run that began in 1999 when Nupur Lala captured the title in 1999 and was later featured in the documentary "Spellbound."

Arvind's family is originally from Hyderabad in southern India, and relatives who live there were watching live on television.

"At home, my dad used to chant Telegu poems from forward to backward and backward to forward, that kind of thing," said Arvind's father, Srinivas. "So language affinity, we value language a lot. And I love language, I love English."

Pranav Sivakumar, who like Arvind rarely appeared flustered onstage, finished second. The 13-year-old from Tower Lakes, Ill., was tripped up by "cyanophycean," a word for a blue-green alga. Sriram Hathwar, 13, of Painted Post, N.Y., finished third, and Amber Born, 14, of Marblehead, Mass., was fourth.

The field was whittled down from 42 semifinalists Thursday afternoon, with spellers advancing based on a formula that combined their scores from a computerized spelling and vocabulary test with their performance in two onstage rounds.

The vocabulary test was new. Some of the spellers liked it, some didn't, and many were in-between, praising the concept but wondering why it wasn't announced at the beginning of the school year instead of seven weeks before the national bee.

"It was kind of a different challenge," said Vismaya Kharkar, 14, of Bountiful, Utah, who finished tied for 5th place. "I've been focusing my studying on the spelling for years and years."

There were two multiple-choice vocabulary tests ? one in the preliminaries and one in the semifinals ? and they were administered in a quiet room away from the glare of the onstage parts of the bee. The finals were the same as always: no vocabulary, just spellers trying to avoid the doomsday bell.

There was a huge groan from the crowd when Arvind got his first German-derived word, "dehnstufe," an Indo-European long-grade vowel.

Milking the moment, he asked, "Can I have the language of origin?" before throwing his hands in the air with a wry smile.

"I had begun to be a little wary of German words, but this year I prepared German words and I studied them, so when I got German words this year, I wasn't worried," Arvind said.

He appeared to have more trouble with "galere," a word for a group of people having a marked common quality or relationship. He asked for the etymology twice ? French and old Catalan ? shifted his body back and forth and stroked his chin before getting it right with seconds to spare.

Amber, an aspiring comedy writer and crowd favorite, bowed out on "hallali," a huntsman's bugle call. She said, "I know, I know," when the clock told her time was running out, and she knew she had missed it, saying "That's not right" as she finished her effort.

The bee's growing popularity is reflected in an ESPN broadcast that gets more sophisticated each year. In the semifinals, Amber got to watch herself featured on a televised promo that also aired on the jumbo screen inside the auditorium.

She then approached the microphone and, referring to herself, deadpanned: "She seemed nice."

Vanya Shivashankar, at 11 the youngest of the finalists, fell short in her bid to become the first sibling of a previous winner to triumph. Her sister, Kavya, won in 2009. Vanya finished tied for 5th after misspelling "zenaida," which means a type of pigeon.

Gay Relationships: Are We More Than Just Friends? - Part One

Gay Relationships: Are We More Than Just Friends? - Part One

Dear Brian:

I have been out of the dating scene for 10 years after having been in a long-term relationship for that length and it has since ended. I find it difficult being back on the singles? market.

I currently find myself in a strange situation; I have met a guy through the Internet. On our ?first date?, I set the context of our encounter by saying that I thought from having left a long-term relationship that it was important for me to be friends and to be interdependent rather than codependent as was my previous experience.

So now seven weeks have passed, we?ve been on a number of dates, but haven?t kissed. I am waiting for him to make a move. I?m fearful and I don?t want to ruin anything if it is meant to be a friendship, although I would like more. How long is too long to know someone before ?stepping things up? and how do you decipher whether it?s a friendship or if there?s potential for a relationship?

'Back On The Scene Again'

___________________________________

Dear 'Back On the Scene Again':

Yes, it can be quite a difficult challenge when transitioning back into the dating scene after having been in a long-term relationship for the length that you were involved in. Feeling rusty and out of practice, it can be overwhelming navigating through those waters again, particularly with the difficulties inherent in finding compatible matches. Not only this, you?re likely still going through a grieving process over the loss of your 10-year relationship even though you initiated the breakup.

So my first bit of advice to you is to relax and breathe! There?s no rush and it?s a process you have to go through. Becoming preoccupied with the dating challenges will only serve to frustrate you and create more angst and desperation that could sabotage your efforts to find healthy dating partners.

Being new to the scene again and wanting ?to do it right the first time around? is commendable and it sounds like you?ve done your homework by realizing the importance of pacing and taking things slow. There does need to be a balance with this, however, otherwise many men will perceive a lack of interest if the signals aren?t expressed that you?re interested.

This new guy you?re dating sounds like someone you?re intrigued with and would like to see developing into more than ?just friends.? While going slow is important, you want to beware of over-thinking it and communicating it too much to the guy you?re seeing.

My concern is that it?s possible your guy may have interpreted your statement on the first date of being friends and interdependent as a barrier you put up towards getting close. Try to be mindful of ways you may be projecting your past relationship mistakes onto new dating encounters.

It?s important in the early stages of dating that you make the contacts light and gradually build in more self-disclosure as you screen the person to determine their suitability; this way, your disclosures match the level of intimacy that?s developed in your progressive meetings with your new dating partner. It?s possible your statements may have come across as ?too heavy? and your guy may have interpreted what you said in such a way that now your relationship with him is defined as purely a friendship because that may be what he thought you were surmising.

After two months with no movement, that may be the case. But don?t fret, my friend! All is not lost!? It?s also very possible that he, too, shares your interest, but is waiting for you to make the first move because of what you said and he?s letting you be in control of the pacing since you expressed the need initially.

Besieged Syria rebels plead for help, Assad confident

By Erika Solomon and Mariam Karouny

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels under siege in a town near the Lebanese border issued a desperate appeal on Thursday for reinforcements and medical supplies as government troops and Lebanese guerrillas pounded their defences.

Alongside a military offensive on Qusair and rebel-held Damascus suburbs, President Bashar al-Assad tried to drive home diplomatic advantage; he highlighted his foreign alliances in announcing the arrival of anti-aircraft missiles from Russia and militia from Lebanon's Hezbollah, and declared his willingness to attend a Geneva peace conference with his squabbling opponents.

An attempt to heal rifts between Islamist and liberal wings of the opposition by offering liberals more seats on the exile body that Arab and Western powers want to form a transitional government failed to mend fences with fighters inside Syria, who issued a new demand to have as many seats as the exile groups.

High hopes the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels had of sweeping Assad from power have been ground down on the battlefield and could suffer a further major setback if they lose Qusair, which guards their supply route from Lebanon and hinders government efforts to maintain contact between the capital Damascus and a coastline that is the stronghold of Assad's Alawite minority.

Warning that the town, once home to some 30,000 people, could be wiped off the map and hundreds of wounded risked dying without help, the rebel fighters inside Qusair issued an appeal on social media for allies to come to break the siege.

"The town is surrounded and there's no way to bring in medical aid," Malek Ammar, an opposition activist in the town, told Reuters by an Internet link, saying about 100 of the 700 wounded needed oxygen.

"What we need them to do," he said of other rebel units, "is come to the outskirts of the city and attack the checkpoints so we can get routes in and out of the city."

In a statement, the rebel commanders warned of dire consequences if help fails to arrive for men who have been fighting house to house for over a week against a force armed with tanks and rocket-launchers and spearheaded by Lebanese fighters from Hezbollah, seasoned in wars against Israel:

"If all rebel fronts do not move to stop this crime being led by Hezbollah and Assad's traitorous army of dogs ... we will soon be saying that there was once a city called Qusair."

Shells were landing by the minute and the attackers seemed to be advancing more quickly after seizing a nearby air base.

Elsewhere, rebels blockaded in eastern suburbs of Damascus known as eastern Ghouta appealed for help on Facebook, saying Assad's forces were "preparing to commit more massacres".

They pointedly said they held not just fellow guerrilla units responsible for coming to their aid but also the Syrian National Coalition, whose exile members have spent a week arguing in Istanbul over how to present a common front at peace talks Washington and Moscow are trying to arrange in Geneva.

WRANGLING

Despite an offer by the Sunni Islamists who dominate the Coalition at present to give a liberal bloc more seats, the haggling continues, to the frustration of Turkey, Gulf Arab states and Western diplomats who have hoped that the body can use the peace conference to assume governing responsibilities.

Inside Syria, the body which groups very diverse fighting units issued its own response, demanding that it be granted half the seats in the Coalition's governing body - a reflection of persistent mistrust between fighters and exiles.

Russia, an ally of Damascus since the Cold War days when Assad's late father was in power, scoffed at the opposition's demands for the president to agree to step aside as a condition for them attending the talks, for which Russian, U.S. and U.N. officials will hold a planning meeting next Wednesday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the Coalition seemed to be "doing everything they can to prevent a political process from starting ... and achieve military intervention".

"We consider such approaches unacceptable," he said, referring to rebel pleas for Western weapons which persuaded Britain and France this week to end an EU arms embargo.

Rivalry between Russia and Western powers has deadlocked previous international efforts to end the fighting but fears that the conflict was spreading - notably with Israel bombing Syria, Iranian-backed Hezbollah declaring it would fight for Assad and reports of troops using chemical weapons - prompted Washington and Moscow to launch a joint call for a conference.

In a television interview not yet broadcast but quoted by a Lebanese newspaper, Assad said he planned to go to the "Geneva 2" meeting but was unconvinced of a fruitful outcome and pledged to continue fighting the two-year-old uprising, in which more than 80,000 Syrians have been killed.

Underlining the international resources he can call on, despite Western sanctions, he said Syria had received a first shipment of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles from Russia under a deal signed before the conflict and which has troubled Israel.

A source close to Russia's defence ministry said, however, that the "hardware itself" had yet to be delivered to Syria, where Moscow has a Mediterranean naval base. But, the source added, "certain parts of the contract may have been fulfilled".

Assad's access to superior weaponry, also supplied by his ally Iran, has kept the rebels in check. Western powers have been reluctant to arm them because of concerns that weapons would end up with anti-Western Islamists and used against them.

Russia's top court to hear Khodorkovsky's appeal

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's highest court on Wednesday set a date for hearing appeals by jailed former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and his business partner.

Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev were arrested in 2003 and convicted in 2005 of evading taxes on the Yukos oil company. The case was widely seen as political punishment of Khodorkovsky, then Russia's richest man, for challenging the power of Vladimir Putin early in his presidency.

The two were tried together again in a second case and convicted in 2010 of stealing oil from Yukos and laundering the proceeds. Last December, the Moscow City Court reduced their prison sentence from 13 years to 11 years, meaning they will be released in 2014.

Lawyers for Khodorkovsky and Lebedev appealed the 2010 convictions and subsequent related court rulings to Russia's Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ruled to set the appeals hearing on Aug. 6. It noted that while the Moscow City Court reviewed and reduced the amount of money stolen, it failed to consider further reducing their sentence. "It can't be seen as well-founded," the court said in its decision, posted on the website of Khodorkovsky's lawyers and supporters.

Khodorkovsky's lawyer Vadim Klyuvgant expressed regret, however, that the court failed to heed defense arguments that the conviction of Khodorkovsky and Lebedev was unlawful and should be overturned. The lawyer also voiced dismay about a delay in setting the appeals hearings, which he argued should be held within a month of Wednesday's ruling.

Connected Data to merge with Drobo, bring Transporter features to Drobo products

Connected Data, makers of Transporter, just announced that it's entered into a merger agreement with Drobo. As a refresher, Transporter is a cloud-based file sharing appliance that provide Dropbox-like functionality without the recurring subscription costs. Drobo's best known for its Ethernet, Thunderbolt, FireWire and USB-based multi-drive storage devices which offer seamless expandabilty. Presumably we'll start seeing some of Connected Data's file sharing features on upcoming Drobo products. The two companies have 30 days to finalize the merger process -- and perhaps even come up with a clever new brand. We vote for DroboPorter ourselves. PR after the break.

Big brothers and sisters pay off for nature's social spiders

May 29, 2013 ? The behavior of social spiders may settle debates over the benefits of older siblings. Cornell University researchers studying Australian social huntsman spiders discovered that younger siblings thrive when raised in nests with older siblings. Bigger brothers and sisters capture bigger, juicier prey, which they share with their younger siblings.

The researchers found that younger siblings weighed substantially more when they shared the prey of their elder brethren. Since smaller spiders eat relatively little, there is little to no cost to the older siblings. The study, published online in the journal Animal Behavior, describes how prey sharing can directly benefit spiders living as a group. Australian social huntsman spiders (Delena cancerides) are fairly common throughout the southern half of Australia, living as family groups with a single mother and multiple clutches of her offspring in retreats under the loose bark of dead trees.

"One of the most unusual things about Delena colonies is that there are siblings of a huge range of ages and sizes, in the colonies together at the same time," said Linda Rayor, a Cornell entomologist and co-author of the study. "It's common to have tiny spiderlings mingling with older siblings that are almost a year old. So what is totally cool about Delena is that mix of siblings of different ages and how they interact around prey brought into their retreat." Rayor describes such social sharing in a Cornell video.

"If you are small, the number of things you can capture may be quite limited," said Eric Yip, the paper's lead author who conducted the research while a graduate student in Rayor's lab.

"The concessions that an essentially solitary hunter like a spider makes in order to live in groups I think is really interesting," Rayor said. "What we're seeing is these huntsman spiders, by living in groups, end up having many benefits in many ways."

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, Australian-American Fulbright Commission and the President's Council of Cornell Women.

From a canteen used by a soldier in World War II, she poured onto the park grounds water collected from oceans and waterways significant to American military history.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Rick Lester, who helped organize the event, said the water symbolized the tears shed by the families of soldiers, airmen, Marines and seamen slain over generations of conflict. Jimison joined others who sprinkled what Lester called reminders "of our country's timeline of freedom."

At Arlington, as combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years, Obama urged the nation to remember.

"Let us not forget as we gather here today that our nation is still at war," Obama said after laying the tradition wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

"When they give their lives, they are still being laid to rest in cemeteries in quiet corners across our country, including here in Arlington," he said. He told the stories of three soldiers who had died. Each had been devoted to their mission and were praised by others for saving lives.

In Atlanta, sprinkled at the park grounds was dirt from the banks of the Delaware River, where General George Washington crossed during the Revolutionary War. Soil came from Germany and France for the Great War now known as World War I.

For its successor a generation later came water from Pearl Harbor, sand from the beaches of Normandy, dirt from the island of Iwo Jima. Chunks of earth came from Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Even pieces of the Berlin Wall for those who served throughout the Cold War. There was none from the Civil War, Lester, said, because "that was a time that our country was divided."

Before they were sprinkled, the soil samples were mixed in a helmet Lester's father wore on D-Day in France during World War II. It was sprinkled from metal cups his uncle, a Marine, used throughout the same war. His father survived. His uncle did not.

The importance of the military refrain "never forget" seared into his mind, he said, as a child, as he watched his uncle's fellow Marines visit his grandmother. A pilot in Vietnam, he recalled in detail the numbers of men lost from missions he flew.

"All I can think about is how those were some of the greatest guys I ever met and what they would have done for this country once they got back," he said.

For Jimison, Monday's commemoration was a far cry from how her family and friends handled her brother's death when it happened. "Nobody talked about it," she said, recalling how politically unpopular American involvement in Vietnam had become and how that affected how veterans and military families were viewed publicly.

So it took many years before she learned much about her brother's service. "My brother died doing what he loved doing," she said. "He was a pilot, and he flew for his country."

At the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, about 20 bicyclists clustered around veteran and museum volunteer Tom Blakey. The paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division jumped at Normandy on D-Day ? June 6, 1944 ? and in May 1945 helped liberate the work camp at Wobbelin in northwest Germany.

"Most of us wondered why we were there, killing people and being killed," he said. "We didn't do anything to deserve it. When we got to that camp and saw what was there, the lights came on."

The cycling group makes regular weekend training runs, and on Monday started a Memorial Day ride about seven miles away at the national cemetery in Chalmette, where the Battle of New Orleans ? the last in the War of 1812 ? was fought.

In the nation's heartland, a veterans park that usually would have been a spot for Memorial Day barbecues instead drew volunteers staffing a medical clinic and cleaning up debris in Moore, Okla.

Homes east and west of the park were destroyed in last week's tornado, and flying debris damaged park equipment and ripped out countless trees ? some 50 feet high.

Out West, once again aboard the historic USS Hornet, 83-year-old Dale Berven reflected on his tour of duty in Korea as a naval aviator as he took in the commemoration. As the bugle corps warmed up, Berven looked out from the now-decommissioned aircraft carrier docked in Alameda, across the bay from San Francisco, which ferried him around the world in a goodwill tour in 1954, the year after the Korean War ended.

At just 23 years old, Berven said he flew dozens of sorties as a lieutenant junior grade with the 91st Fighter Squadron.

"I was young and single, I had volunteered and I wanted to do that type of work," said Berven, now a docent at the USS Hornet Museum. "That is how people are now. They're not drafted, so you have 18-, 19-year olds who are giving up their lives for the freedom of this country. We ought to honor all those service men and women and not bring politics into it."

The holiday weekend also marked the traditional start of the U.S. vacation season. AAA, one of the nation's largest leisure travel agencies, expected 31.2 million Americans to hit the road over the weekend, virtually the same number as last year. Gas prices were about the same as last year, up 1 cent to a national average of $3.65 a gallon Friday.

Mark Hunt Suffered a Broken Toe in UFC 160 Co-main Event, Says Dos Santos was Too ?Slick?

Mark Hunt UFC 119-007Heavyweight Mark Hunt suffered a broken toe in the first round of the UFC 160 co-main event bout with former champion Junior dos Santos on Saturday.

Hunt (9-8) posted the news about the injury on his official facebook page following the fight.

?Thanks for the support, apologies about the result, junior was too slick for me, got a broken toe first round, and had no movement, but like i said before, if i am going out i am out on my back thanks again 1luv,? Hunt wrote.

Hunt?s assessment is accurate.? dos Santos was a little too slick and too quick for the Samoan.? He was able to use his speed advantage to move in and out, land his jab and combinations, and avoid most of Hunt?s power shots.

Hunt pressed forward the entire fight, while dos Santos circled on the outside.

The end came in the closing minute of the final round when dos Santos landed a wheel kick to Hunt?s head sending the 39-year-old New Zealander crashing to the canvas.? He followed with a well-placed right hand that left Hunt unconscious.

The win earned dos Santos a third match with UFC heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez. ?Velasquez defended his title against Antonio ?Bigfoot? Silva in the UFC 160 main event. ?The trilogy is expected to take place later this year.

Outdoor Power with Home Depot | Honea Express

Boys Hose

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

We rent, which means there is a fine line between the amount of work and investment we want to put into our yard and how frowzy we are willing to let it get. Our landlord, unfortunately, has no qualms about the latter, and aside from an occasional mowing we are generally on our own.

Luckily, my family enjoys a good project and working with our hands?meaning we hardly had to bribe the kids at all. It?s that fun!

Boys at Work

Early photographic evidence of the boys working on stuff.

We decided that something we could do together, and for very little money, was to build some mounted flower beds on the end of the house and fill the patch of dirt and weeds that pass as desert chic with a sustainable garden and/or salad bar for the many rabbits currently residing in the area.

unkept house

Exhibit A: The ugly end of the house.

planting garden

This is where the bunnies will brunch.

However, a lingering winter and a cool spring coupled with busy schedules and another excuse for laziness kept us from maintaining the property as well as we should have, and in our absence the wildlife has flourished. Also, grime. The place is filthy, and before we can build it up we need to wash it down. Hence my looking for outdoor power equipment, specifically a hot water pressure washer at my local Home Depot?apparently a pressure washer hose packs more punch than the garden variety we have curled up in the corner (possible exceptions include top photo). Who knew?

This just in, Home Depot does not mess around when it comes to outdoor power. For instance, the DEWALT Pro Pressure Washers (4,200 psi pictured) look like they could really leave a mark? I mean clean really well!

Bulgaria's PM-designate pledges help for poor

By Tsvetelia Tsolova

SOFIA (Reuters) - The man most likely to form Bulgaria's next government pledged on Sunday to spend more to help society's most deprived, but said he would keep public debt low enough to maintain a currency peg to the euro.

Plamen Oresharski, 53, offers the best chance for ending a political stalemate that has dragged on since the government quit in February in the face of protests against austerity measures in the European Union's poorest country.

Bulgaria needs a working government to hammer out a 2014 budget and lobby for EU funds required to end an economic crisis and raise living standards.

The center-right party that led the former government won most seats in a May 12 election but could not command a majority, so it passed the baton to Oresharski, a former finance minister, to build a cabinet of technocrats supported by the Socialists and the ethnic Turkish MRF.

The country's president has mandated him to form a government. He must still win a vote on confidence in parliament, a prospect seen as likely given that all he needs is one abstention among MPs from the center-right GERB or the nationalist Attack party.

"I have not been involved in political talks, but from some signs it is obvious that Attack will either abstain or not vote. That gives us certain reasons to be confident," the softly-spoken Oresharski told Reuters.

With the average salary at just 400 euros ($520) per month, pensions half that and every fifth Bulgarian living below the poverty line, the new government needs to show it can work to improve incomes or risk fresh demonstrations.

Although he is not a member of the political parties that have long dominated Bulgarian politics, Oresharski hardly symbolizes a fresh start.

He oversaw a period of dizzying economic boom and dramatic bust as finance minister in a Socialist-led administration that lasted from 2005 to 2009.

Given the May vote's inconclusive result and continued public frustration with the political class, Oresharski is treading carefully, promising policies with broad support across the parties.

He said the new government would look to find up to 200 million levs ($132 million) from the budget to help poorer people pay electricity and heating bills, create temporary jobs and boost support for mothers.

"I believe there is a way to restructure spending and keep the deficit at the planned level of 1.3 percent of gross domestic product this year," Oresharski said in an interview.

The new cabinet would keep flat income and corporate tax rates unchanged at 10 percent - some of the lowest in the EU - to attract foreign investors and help propel growth beyond an expected 1 percent this year, he said. Before the May vote, the Socialists had pledged to cut tax for lower earners.

Oresharski said he would discuss raising the minimum wage from 310 levs per month and increasing pensions, which have been frozen since 2009, in line with inflation, by boosting tax collection rather than raising additional loans.

The government would stick with a Socialist promise to create 250,000 more jobs in the country of 7.3 million and try to keep electricity prices unchanged. It promises to restructure an opaque and inefficient energy sector in an attempt to avoid more of the protests, which started when bills rose in cold weather.

It will also consider restarting a nuclear power plant project at Belene, canceled by the previous government, if a new review showed the 2,000 megawatt plant made economic sense, Oresharski said. ($1 = 1.5126 Bulgarian levs) ($1 = 0.7734 euros)

Rockets hit south Beirut after Hezbollah vows Syria victory

By Dominic Evans

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two rockets hit a Shi'ite Muslim district of southern Beirut on Sunday and wounded several people, residents said, a day after the leader of Lebanese Shi'ite militant movement Hezbollah said his group would continue fighting in Syria until victory.

It was the first attack to apparently target Hezbollah's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the two-year conflict in neighboring Syria, which has sharply heightened Lebanon's own sectarian tensions.

One rocket landed in a car sales yard next to a busy road junction in the Chiah neighborhood and the other hit an apartment several hundred meters away, wounding five people, residents said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Brigadier Selim Idris, head of Syria's Western-backed rebel military command, told Al-Arabiya Television that his forces had not carried out the attack and urged rebels to keep their conflict inside Syria.

But another Syrian rebel, Ammar al-Wawi, told Lebanon's LBC Television the attack was a warning to authorities in Beirut to restrain Hezbollah. "In coming days we will do more than this. This is a warning to Hezbollah, and the Lebanese government to keep Hezbollah's hands off Syria," he said.

A Lebanese security source said three rocket launchers were found, one of which had misfired or failed to launch, in hills to the southeast of the Lebanese capital, about 5 miles from the area where the two rockets landed.

The rocket strikes came hours after Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, a powerful supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said his fighters were committed to the conflict whatever the cost.

"We will continue to the end of the road. We accept this responsibility and will accept all sacrifices and expected consequences of this position," he said in a televised speech on Saturday evening. "We will be the ones who bring victory".

Syria's two-year uprising has polarized Lebanon, with Sunni Muslims supporting the rebellion against Assad and Shi'ite Hezbollah and its allies standing by Assad. The Lebanese city of Tripoli has seen frequent explosions of violence between majority Sunnis and its small Alawite community.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the violence in Lebanon. "The war in Syria must not become the war in Lebanon," he told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Kuwait, which like several Gulf states warned its nationals last year against visiting Lebanon, urged any citizens in Lebanon to leave and reiterated its advice not travel there.

QUSAIR OFFENSIVE

Until recently, Nasrallah insisted that Hezbollah had not sent guerrillas to fight alongside Assad's forces, but in his speech on Saturday he said it was fighting in Syria to defend Lebanon from radical Islamists now leading Syria's rebellion.

Hezbollah forces and Assad's troops launched a fierce assault last week aimed at driving Syrian rebels out of Qusair, a strategic town close to the Lebanese border which rebels have used as a supply route for weapons coming into the country.

Lebanese authorities, haunted by Lebanon's own 1975-1990 civil war and torn by the same sectarian rifts as its powerful neighbor, have sought to pursue a police of "dissociation" from the Syrian turmoil.

But they are unable to prevent the flow into Syria of Sunni Muslim gunmen who support the rebels and Hezbollah fighters who support Assad, and have struggled to absorb nearly half a million refugees coming the other way to escape the fighting.

At least 25 people have been killed in Tripoli in the north of Lebanon over the last week in street fighting which has been partly triggered by the battle for Qusair across the border.

Nasrallah's speech was condemned by Sunni Muslim former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, who said that Hezbollah, set up by Iran in the 1980s to fight Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon, had abandoned anti-Israeli "resistance" in favor of sectarian conflict in Syria.

"The resistance is ending by your hand and your will," Hariri said in a statement. "The resistance announced its political and military suicide in Qusair".

Hariri is backed by Saudi Arabia, which along with other Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab monarchies has strongly supported the uprising against Iranian-backed Assad, whose minority Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

In Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, residents said three rockets landed on Sunday close to the mainly Shi'ite border town of Hermel, without causing injuries. Rebels have targeted Hermel from inside Syria several times in recent weeks.

PFT: Flacco likes Ravens' continuity on O-line

Norv Turner, Josh GordonAP

With coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner installing a new system in Cleveland, Browns receiver Josh Gordon is excited.

Gordon, a speedy receiver who averaged 16.1 yards a catch as a rookie, says he expects to make even more big plays in his second season because the Browns? offense will be perfectly suited for his talents.

?Defenses will be shocked to say the least with how much we?re running down field,? Gordon told the Akron Beacon Journal. ?I?ve never ran this much as a wide receiver ever in my life, and that?s a good thing. And not just me, everyone from the slot guys to running backs, everyone?s got passing plays in the system.?

Last year Gordon didn?t have much time to get ready for the NFL after arriving in July in the supplemental draft, but he still managed to play in all 16 games, starting 13, and catch 50 passes while leading the Browns with 805 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. This year, being with the team from Day One and participating in Organized Team Activities, Gordon believes he?s going to be even better.

?You?re a head up on the game,? he said. ?For guys, veterans and rookies, to have all this leading up until [the fall], I was way behind the 8-ball coming into last year. Now it?s a huge advantage for me to learn the offense, get in shape, get in more of a rhythm with whatever you?re doing out there, so you don?t feel as stressed or as new to everything. It?s definitely slowed down a lot.?

Last year, Gordon had a good year despite missing most of the offseason and playing in a bad offense that wasn?t well suited to his skills. This year, Gordon has every reason to believe he?ll be even better.

NYPD investigating actress Bynes allegations

NEW YORK (AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.

"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.

The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.

In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.

Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.

Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.

Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.

Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

Disco Balls Can Actually Facilitate Art, Not Just Boogying Down

Putting 50 mirrored balls in a semi-lighted room seems like a terrible idea. Actually it seems like a great idea for a rave and a bad idea for an art installation. But it worked out pretty well at the CLICK Festival in Denmark.

Light Leaks by Kyle McDonald and Jonas Jongejan is an installation that uses projectors to control light shining on disco balls. The design relies on structured light scans, which take 41 images each, to map different reflection patterns on the walls. By combining data from all the scans, the designers can predict the position of every projected pixel and can model the reflections in the room using SketchUp.

According to Creative Applications, the designers are planning to install similar works in the future when they can have more control and advanced information about their display space. Surprisingly, the installation is the most mellow and captivating disco ever. [Creative Applications]

Myron Mixon, who has written two barbecue cookbooks, makes his living opening restaurants, winning barbecue competitions, and being a judge on the show "Barbecue Pitmasters" on Discovery. So when the master speaks, we should all listen. Here are some flavorful bits we gleaned from his newest cookbook, "Everyday Barbecue":

1. Barbecue is simple, don't over-think it. You really don't need a fancy grill or expensive tools to be a pitmaster. Barbecue is the modern-day equivalent of roasting meat over a fire in the woods. Actually, it still is just meat roasted over a fire ? except the woods are backyard lawns, and there are no wolves or bears.?

2. Marinate meat if you want people to like you. Marinades add layers of flavor ? meat speaks for itself, but the downfall of the average backyard grill master is the quality of the meat. Different marinades also enable variations in recipes with the same cut of meat.

3. Pork belly is bacon that hasn't been sliced yet. Let's all stay calm when we consider this. Don't do anything stupid. Walk to your cars, try to keep your hands from shaking, and keep your eyes on the road when you go buy some.

4. Vegetarians can be great grill masters, too.?It is sometimes implied or just explicitly stated that meat is the greatest and only answer to a backyard barbecue. Don't listen to people who say that. After all, meat wouldn't exist without vegetables.?

5. Don't be afraid to experiment. Did you know you can grill a pizza? Did you know you can cook a cake or a pie on a grill? Did you know that eating a slice of pie that was cooked on a grill will automatically make you weep tears of joy? Someone out there put those things on a grill once. That someone deserves the medal of freedom and a statue (that also doubles as a grill).

6. Coleslaw and cornbread are the only sides you'll need. Keep it simple, remember? Coleslaw ? cold and creamy ? has been spicy barbecue's most important accompaniment since man started cooking with fire. And cornbread is the perfect solution to sop up the sauce left on your plate.

7. The end-all recipe for barbecue sauce is now yours. "I have heard people eating barbecue at festivals say that 'the sauce makes the barbe?cue,'" writes Mixon. "It's?not true. The smoke makes the barbecue. The sauce is a finisher. It's what you put on your meat?after it cooks to enhance its appeal. It can add a great punch, but I've had plenty of delicious?barbecued meat with no sauce at all. I've been around barbe?cue sauces of different stripes?all of my life. My family's sauce recipe, which my par?ents were just beginning to market?when my father suddenly passed away, is what got me into cooking competitive barbecue in?the first place. We have always preferred a hickory?-style sauce, meant to closely evoke and complement the flavor of hickory? smoked meats. It's world famous and a secret recipe, so the?only way you'll taste the original is to order it from me, but if you insist on not giving me your business, here's a reasonable approximation that is still delicious."
?

The only barbecue sauce you'll ever need

?Makes about 3 cups

2 tablespoons onion powder

2 tablespoons garlic powder

Two 6-?ounce cans tomato paste

2 tablespoons paprika

2/3 cup cider vinegar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons maple syrup

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and pulse a couple of times to thoroughly combine.?

2. Pour the mixture into a medium saucepan and place over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sauce is heated through, but do not allow it to come to a boil.

3. Remove the pan from the?heat. Use the sauce immediately as you like, or, if reserving for a later use, allow the mixture?to cool, then pour it into a large bottle or container and store, tightly covered and refrigerated,?for up to 1 year.
