For much of the year, it seemed barely a week, and sometimes a day, went by with no mention of bringing a minor league baseball team to the Port City.

Nearly two months after Wilmington voters shot down a proposal to build a taxpayer-funded stadium, Mayor Bill Saffo said this is still a viable market for a ballpark.

But he doubts baseball will be discussed for the next decade. ?At least,? he added.

In November, 70 percent of city voters rejected the proposal to fund and build a $37 million stadium. The vote followed a lengthy discussion period between the Atlanta Braves, which would have brought a minor league team to the Port City, and Mandalay Baseball, which would have operated the stadium.

The campaign leading up to the vote was contentious and ?Vote No Stadium Tax? signs popped up across the city.

Saffo, who supported the stadium deal, said after the vote that the city would not pursue baseball. Weeks later, that hasn?t changed.

?I think the only option that?s out there that voters made very clear is that it would have to be a privately funded deal,? Saffo said.

Representatives from both Mandalay and the Braves said they had no plans to pursue a stadium after the failed referendum.

?There is no plan B as far as we?re concerned,? said Rich Neumann, Mandalay?s president of baseball development, just after the vote. ?We?ve done everything we could do to bring this opportunity to Wilmington and we feel it?s over, barring some complete, unforeseen set of circumstances,? he said.

But no private deal has yet to surface.

After the vote, Terry Spencer, chairman of the ?Vote Yes!? effort, said the group would support any future baseball opportunities that surfaced. But he wasn?t optimistic.

?If there were any investors, they would have come out of the woodwork by now,? he said.

CHICAGO (CBS) ? 25-year old Katie Widmar was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma when she was 19. She says when she was going through chemotherapy, she said there was one thing she couldn?t live without.

?I would get so cold, everything hurt my skin because of the chemo, I wouldn?t go anywhere without my blanket.?

So she and her mother founded ?Covers of Comfort? which provides blankets to adult cancer patients in Chicago and in Iowa where the Widmars are from.

?We do Northwestern, University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa Methodist in Des Moines and the two hospitals in Dubuque.?

Now six years cancer free, Widmar says the ?Covers of Comfort? program makes all the difference for her and so many others.

?When you?re in the hospital as an adult, you are many times alone. We wanted to give them something that this there?s because there is nothing really out there for them. Every adult needs a blankie when you?re sick,? added Widmar.

The blankets are made and donated by friends, neighbors, and businesses.

The Widmars gave out 300-500 blankets just this year.

?You can?t go through something like this and see the outpouring of love and caring from people and not do something to pay it forward.?

Oil & Gasoline Markets End 2012 with Swollen Inventory Levels

In analyzing the last EIA report of the year it is noteworthy that gasoline stocks really rose the last 5 weeks of the year. The takeaway isn`t so much that gasoline inventories rose 23 million barrels the last 5 weeks of the year, wow that is some build in inventories, but the fact that Oil inventories barely budged at all during the process.

Seasonal issues regarding tax selling in order to move as much oil through the system to avoid higher tax liabilities is primarily responsible for the higher run rates of refineries, and thus the build in gasoline inventories, but that should result in large drawdowns of oil as there is a push and pull between products and the base commodity oil. Yet we end the year slightly above the 370 million barrel mark in US oil inventories.

This is actually very bearish for oil because with these gasoline builds refineries are not going to want to keep adding more gas to storage as part of the reason refiners have done so much better with their margins is by keeping low inventory levels in the products so you have what appears to be a tight market.

Well, we no longer have a tight market in gasoline, so no need to draw as much crude to produce the end product. We should start to experience some rather substantial builds over the next couple of months in crude oil as refiners request less base commodity, and lower their run rates.

The Rise in Domestic Production

This occurrence really points to the rise in US domestic production as imports were fairly light during the last two months of the year, and we normally have substantial drawdowns with refinery run rates in the 90s, so something definitely worth paying attention to going forward into 2013.

Another point on imports and domestic production is that there is a very noticeable trend on the charts; imports have trended down after July, which is what one would expect after the summer driving season is coming to an end, but domestic production starts accelerating at a sharp right angle from July towards year-end.

So these are domestic projects that are strongly trending regardless of summer driving season demand, and unlike imports that are managed according to seasonal demand dynamics, i.e., Saudi Arabia pumps more or less depending upon the season, the domestic projects are just going full bore and on a production path to increase performance each and every month if possible.

This is something new to the market because we no longer have managed supply, just as Iraq is maximizing production right now because they need the revenue, well these domestic projects are just revenue based machines, and not being managed based upon supply and demand of the end market. I will provide two charts to illustrate this interesting phenomenon.

The Demand Picture

Another point to be made is what is happening with gasoline demand, down in the wholesale sector 2.8 percent year-on-year. With GDP being better than expected, and most believing that the economy is stronger than it was last year, this could be related to better fuel efficient vehicles on average in the US consumer fleet as the car sales were pretty good the last two years, and maybe higher prices changing driving behaviors on a more permanent basis.

The demand chart for 2012 can be explained by the run-up and actual summer driving season, with the inevitable falloff towards the end of the year. However, many analysts have forecast that the US being a mature country is going to trend down on a longer term basis from a demand standpoint, with most of the growth coming from emerging markets, but the year over year comparison is something worth paying attention to for 2013.

If we have a repeat deceleration in demand at the end of 2013 year comparisons then further analysis will be needed to identify potential additional reasons for slowing demand in an economy that is seemingly strengthening with a stronger housing and employment market.

Fundamentals versus Price

It would be great if Wall Street actually invested and traded based upon the fundamentals, but the oil markets have long since diverged from trading upon the fundamentals, especially in the short term, and are more ripe with ?managing? price swings either through sophisticated algorithms, and ?creative? fund flows than any notion of the fundamentals.

To put it non-euphemistically, basically the oil market has been rigged for years, like most markets to some extent, and is about as corrupt as it comes. All any bystander has to do is pull up a price ladder of bids and asks, known as a trading Dom, and watch all the large fake orders and other assorted order flow shenanigans used to manipulate price up and down the chart each day.

However, over the long term, the markets cannot stray too far from the fundamentals, for eventually the fundamentals take precedent over the trading shenanigans, especially if there is a definable, sustained trend in the fundamentals, and it appears that we are entering a new age where the world is going to have a five year period of abundant supply.

A New Era: Growing Economy with Lower Energy Prices

In fact, more supply than demand, even with a robust economy, because part of the reason the world economy will be doing so well is all the global enterprises out there producing oil. It?s a good business with very high margins when compared to many other industries with the past decade of higher prices.

Consequently, even if the US economy really takes off in 2013 as some have forecasted, don`t look for demand to overtake supply in the equation. The domestic oil renaissance means that we could have a booming economy, and still have more supply than we can use each day. Thus it is actually possible to have an era with a great economy, and even lower oil prices due to the domestic oil boom.

A Home Tour at Marsha's

?I always like visiting better after Christmas,? said friend Marsha. ? After thinking about it, I do agree. ?The pressure is gone, and one can relax and enjoy being with ones you love. That is when Marsha invited me over for coffee, and I was beyond excited. ?I jumped at the invitation, and offered to bring some Hungarian Butterhorns. ?It is always a joy and a pleasure to visit Marsha. ?I call her my cheerleader. ?She encourages me, writes better comments than I do blogs, and promotes Lanabird. ?Words can not express how thankful I am to her.

Not only is she a totally wonderful person, she has a beyond wonderful home. ?I took pictures so you can visit also.

Be still my heart! ?For years I have admired English chimney pots, and look what greeted me at the front door. ?Filled with oversized ornaments, it is festive and fantastic.

The painted wardrobe from Germany is breathtaking. ?I like it. I love it. ?I do believe it is the prettiest one I have ever seen.

Beyond fantastic are the three wise men on her mantle. ?Marsha said she got them years ago at The Market at North Park. ?I love it that the camels are wearing the crowns.

Looking from her dining room into the den, you can get a sense of how beautiful her home is. ?Isn?t that the most gorgeous antique chandelier?

Be still my heart! ? ?The antique turkey platter takes my breath away. ?It was from Bob?s (Marsha?s husband) family. ? ?Most of the antiques in her home are family heirlooms.

Mercury glass, a mirrored tray, and glittery silver trees are beautiful on the sofa table.

Next to the sofa table is a darling little chair holding a lit tree. ?How cute is that!

I love, love, love, this blue and ?white platter filled with candy canes and red and white glass balls.

Gorgeous ? just gorgeous. ?Marsha had a beautiful antique bowl filled with large pine cones and silver stars.

Marsha and Bob added on a large room on the back of their home. ?It is perfect for entertaining. ?Love the leaded glass side windows (I know they have a name, but I do not know the name.)

Guarding the back door is the most adorable snowman in an antique cart. ?He was handmade by a lady in McKinney.

In several places in her home, Marsha used architectural pieces above mirrors, pictures, and doors. ?The details in her home are amazing.

In the living room there was another small lit tree. ?What a wonderful look.

Sweet Mother of Pearl. ?On the side table, is the happiest Holy Family I have ever seen. ?The smile on Mary and Baby Jesus make me smile. ?I know Joseph is smiling under his beard. ?This reminds me of Marsha. ?She is always happy and smiling. ?Marshachristmas is how she is known on the comment page, and I must say she is a gift to all who know her.

Honestly it was hard for me to leave because I kept seeing more and more unusual things. ?The little tree on the right with the fruit was Bob?s mothers ? probably from the 1940?s. ?I love it, and I love that they still have it.

Amazing! ?Marsha even has a Crawford biscuit tin.

Marsha and Bob are one of the most loved and respected couples I have ever known. ?Thank you for letting me share your home. ?I had such a good time visiting with you, and eating your delicious pimento cheese sandwiches. ?I know I missed many things. ?Your home is truly wonderful.
