iTunes Match goes live, lets you sync high quality tunes across devices (Yahoo! News)

The song-syncing subscription service will bring all of your Apple gadgets up to speed

Today Apple debuted iTunes Match, a music syncing service that the company first announced?in tandem with iCloud in June. While the other major components of that announcement ?namely iCloud and iOS 5 ? made their debuts last month, iTunes Match has been a bit slower in trickling out to iDevices.

In a streaming-minded world, iTunes Match takes a decidedly different tack. Unlike on-demand music star Spotify, iTunes Match is all about getting the music you already own "matched up" across your devices. For $25 a year, iTunes Match scans your existing music collection and then finds each song in the iTunes Store and uploads any remaining songs that aren't in Apple's vast sonic catalog. Once your music stash is safe and sound in the cloud, you can stream every single tune from any computer (PC or Mac), iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The neat part is that included in the $25 subscription fee, iTunes Match will automatically detect the highest quality version of each song, even if the original sounded like something coming out of your car's tape deck. And remarkably, the service doesn't only honor iTunes downloads ? it works just the same for anything you've imported from a CD or downloaded from less than legitimate sources too.
