Easy & Effective Green Home Improvement Tips

It isn?t easy to get people to implement energy efficiency in the home because they always associate such measures with expense. However, once you become educated, it?s quite easy to be green. This is especially the case when you show them statistics which prove that going green in the home will actually save money in the long run. As well as reducing your annual energy bills, you will also improve the comfort in your home. Below are some cheap and easy tips though we will be adding slightly more complex tips in future blog posts. As you will soon see, the easy tips can be implemented by anyone today. Though each individual tip may only save a few pounds a year, adopting a number of them will lead to significant savings.

Thermostats

A huge number of UK homes that have in-room thermostats set them way too high. Even reducing your thermostat by one degree can save as much as ?60 a year. Ask yourself if it?s really so cold that you can?t shave one degree off your thermostat temperature? You can find your hot water cylinder thermostat on the side of the water cylinder. It will be a small box with a dial. If it is set at anything above 60 degrees Celsius, reduce it immediately. At this temperature, your boiler will not be forced to work as long in order to ensure your water is hot. The less work it does, the less fuel is used.

Closing Curtains & Doors

Believe it or not, closing your curtains at the right time can save you money. Once the sun sets, the effect of solar radiation diminishes. By closing your curtains, you keep the heat inside as well as reducing draughts from the windows. The same applies to internal doors. Keep them closed and keep the heat in. You must also set your heating system in a manner that ensures you only heat up the rooms currently being occupied.

Turn It Off!

The most basic tip of all and one that?s commonly ignored. Why on earth would anyone want to keep an unoccupied room lit? Yet it?s a bad habit still carried by millions of people around the world. The use of old fashioned tungsten bulbs only adds to the problem.

It?s all too common for people to have their electrical appliances such as televisions and DVD players on ?Standby? mode. By turning all your appliances completely off rather than having them on standby, you could save as much as 10% of your electricity bills which is not small change.

Water

Stop filling your kettle to the brim if you?re only having one cup of tea or coffee! The more water that?s boiled, the more energy is used by the kettle in order to bring the water to the boil. Dripping taps are more than just a noisy nuisance. Reduce your water rates by fixing these irritants. It?s estimated that a dripping tap wastes enough water each year to fully fill two average-sized bath tubs.

Washing Machine & Dryer

Instead of doing two small loads in the washing machine, always wait until there is enough clothes for a full load. Also, washing your clothes at 30 or 40 degrees Celsius can be as much as 30% cheaper than washing at 60 degrees. Rather than dumping your clothes in the tumble dryer, try drying them outdoors. Although UK weather is not always conducive to good drying, take advantage of any dry day to get your clothes dry. Alternatively, place them on a clothes horse indoors and allow them to dry naturally. On average, a tumble dryer costs over ?110 a year in electricity.

These are some of the most basic energy saving tips. In a future blog, we will look at more advanced methods of saving on your energy bills.
