There are 40 events, including track and field, tennis, swimming, diving, bowling, table tennis, men?s basketball, bocce, badminton, volleyball, cycling, basketball field goals, racquetball, tennis, softball throw, football throw, and team line dancing, and more. There?s even a sport called ?pickle ball,? a combination of badminton, tennis, and table tennis.
Events take place all over Northern Virginia, including Wakefield Park in Annandale.Even if you?re not in top physical condition, there are events for you, too, like scrabble, duplicate bridge, Mexican train dominos, billiards, and Wii bowling.
? Contestants must be 50 years old by Dec. 31. 2012, and must live in one of the jurisdictions covered by the sponsors: the parks and recreation departments and other agencies in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church. Participants will compete against people in the same age bracket.?
The deadline to register is Sept. 1. You can register online, by phone, 703/228-3300, or email. The registration fee, $12, covers multiple events. There are additional fees for bowling and golf. Opening ceremonies are Saturday, Sept. 15, 9:45 a.m., at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 S. Second St., Arlington. The indoor track and field competition will be held there, too, that day, along with a health fair and sports massages. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded after each event. Volunteers are needed to help with the competitions.
