Why Incandescent Light Bulbs Still ... - What Is Home Improvement?

Despite the research that has been carried out, and the results that have been published, home owners are still happy to buy incandescent light bulbs. In any hardware or lighting store, and even in online stores on the internet, the range remains extensive, and light and lamp manufacturers seem only too happy to accommodate all shapes and sizes.

The comparisons that have been made between the incandescent bulb and the energy saving alternatives are well documented, and the results well founded. The advantages of using fluorescent light bulbs are accurate, with a much longer life span, more cost efficient energy use and even a better quality of light all factors that have seen the fluorescent option become highly popular.

In fact, all of the different forms of low energy light bulbs that are available on the market have their attributes, but the incandescent remains a firm favourite with home owners around the world. Exactly why can be broken down to three main points, namely their cost, their range and their effectiveness.

Their Cost

When it comes to buying a light bulb for the home, not everyone sees the need to spend extra on a low energy option. The actual cost of a single incandescent bulb is significantly less than the alternatives. Depending on the make and design, an incandescent bulb can be just 25 per cent of the cost, and while over time the energy saving bulb, for example, will save money, such a small price is still highly attractive.

Often, the area to be lit is a stairwell or side entrance which may not be used all that often, in total contrast to a living room or bedroom light. In such cases, the incandescent option seems perfectly apt and what extra money might be spent will likely be spread over a long time, and so not really affect the home owner at all. Of course, many people simply want a light in their work space, reading place or personal area, and they are not so fussy which type of bulb is used.

Their Range

The options in incandescent bulbs cannot be described as limited, with a vast range available on the market. Their caps are still screw in or bayonet, ensuring that practically every type of light fixture is accommodated, while their variety of shapes range from the stereotypical golf ball to the elegant candle. The glass used for the bulb can be clear for bright light, or opal for a softer lighting effect. They are also available in a variety of colours.

Perhaps the most decorative is the bent tip, which mimics the shape of a flame. This type of bulb is a little more expensive than its colleagues, given the special design that it has. They are also available with bulb glass that is frosted, again for a soft lighting effect, or tinted in gold, for example, to provide a warm or impressive glow.

Their Effectiveness

Lastly, practical needs should not be underestimated, with the simple need for a working light the main motivation to buy any new light bulb. For that reason, the effectiveness of the bulb is often considered more important. After all, not every room requires a soft light effect or golden hue. Such special effects are luxuries reserved for company and creating ambiance, aspects that go beyond the practical requirements.

The fact is that incandescent light bulbs continue to be a highly effective lighting option for every room in the home, providing clear light for reading, writing or just generally not being in the dark. Due to recent legislation, these bulbs come in a narrow range of wattage, from 25 watts to 60 watts, but a range large enough to effectively cater to the needs of most domestic areas.

Smaller rooms can be amply lighted with 40 watt or 60 watt bulbs, while 25 watts are often used when low light is needed, perhaps with a table lamp when the light is close to items.

There is no doubt that low energy light bulbs can save money, but the practical aspects of usage can temper their advantage. Meanwhile, fluorescent light bulbs are enjoying the height of popularity, and given that they seem to offer the complete package, that is no surprise. However, the incandescent range remains a practical choice still.
