Question: Where should one put their money now? Gold, Silver, ETF?s U.S. Treasuries, CD?s, mutual funds?

In this economic climate of uncertainty and instability, where is a semi safe bet to move your cash for a while? Real Estate is still falling. Do you buy Gold/silver/ or what? Where would you keep the precious medals safely> ? Could the Government confiscate it like they did in 1933?

Can the U.S./World economies collapse? Can their be a run on the banks? What does one do in this precarious economic climate.

I am in my mid 50?s , have a fairly low tolerance for risk, but I hear the dollar will be devalued even if I was to leave it in a ?safe? bank account. I have a house(not pad for yet) 1 child still in college (a junior) And leaving it ?under the mattress) is ridiculous. Interest rates a re so low now? What can I do to safely make a little interest, not lose principle, and not lose dollar value due to devaluation?

What possible reason would the government have to confiscate precious metals? They had a good reason in 1933 ? they neeeded to devalue the dollar. The currency is no longer pegged to gold so the govt doesn?t care that you own gold (or silver or rhodium or whatever?). Anyway, the govt actually forced people to sell gold, they didn?t just take it.

You just do what you always do in running your portfolio ? forget about your forecasts for the future because your forecasts aren?t worth anything. You create a diversified portfolio in which you get stung only a little by every risk. Buy stocks, bonds, precious metals, land, etc..

Edit: This ?you hear the dollar will be devalued?? The dollar being devalued is just another term that means ?we will have inflation?. Bond prices incorporate inflation expectations in their yield curve. They currently do not anticipate much inlfation anytime soon. In fact, I would say that deflation is much more likely than significant inflation. So now you have to ask yourself a question ? are the people telling you that the dollar will be devalued more reliable than the bond market? If the answer is yes, then you should go short Treasury bond futures or something. If the answer is no, then you should forget about them and go build a portfolio that is diverse and robust and addresses your known needs.

The people who are screaming most loudly for dollar devaluation and inflation are precious metal bugs. Most of their information comes unltimately from people who want to sell you gold and silver. That?s just not a reliable source of information. The US Treasury bond yield curve giving you deceent estimates of inflation sounds vastly more reliable to me.

Edit 2: Do any of the people who gave me thumbs down on this answer have anything intelligent to say about it or are you just convinced that gold bugs are right about inflation and they are more reliable than the yield curve? I know inflation expectations from yield curves is beyond most gold bugs..
